2020.09.05 07:58 beast2677 Struggling to find NOC level B job [PGWP to PR]

Hi guys, I managed to gain about 1 year and 5 months of work experience before being laid off, when COVID started.
I’ve been desperately looking for job in my field (mechanical engineering) for the past 5 month, but haven’t had any luck. I need 7 more months to get 2 years of work experience.
My CRS score is 437 now (maxed out IELTS), which will go up to 462 once I reach 2 years of work experience. My visa expires in exactly a year.
1) Is there any hope for me?
2) Can someone recommend me a job that’s easy to get, but also a NOC level B? I have tried applying for sales positions that specifically cater to B2B / wholesale, but haven’t had any luck receiving call backs (no prior sales experience).
Man.. this feels like a “slow and painful death”. I’m looking at the draws and looks the score isn’t coming down any time soon.
I’ve used up all my resources in terms of job search (Craigslist, indeed, other jobs sites) and running out of time.
If you have any advice regarding how else I could improve my CRS score, please do share it. Hoping someone was in similar situation, and found their way out.
I came here as an international student at 18. I am based in Vancouver, BC.

2020.08.04 01:15 Silverfoxman NAD3020 amp and Advent speakers

Loving this Craigslist $250 purchase in Vancouver, BC - I picked up a pair of Advent 1 large speakers and a NAD3020 amp. I’m using a basic rca cable and midrange speaker wire for connections. I’m using my older Tascam us600 for a DAC and using my laptop to play FLAC files into the NAD. Sounds awesome, but it does feel like it could be better.
Anything obvious I can do to make the system better while i find a turntable and CD player - which I know will sound better than the laptop through the DAC? Any advice appreciated - equalizer? Preamp? Some kind of a better DAC?? Thanks in advance!

2020.07.10 09:09 NursingPRN First Car: Civic vs Mazda 3 vs Forte vs Rio

This will be my first car – though I've been fortunate enough to drive my parents' vehicles for the past 8+ years. This car will mainly be used to commute to and from work (roughly 50 km/31 mi round trip). My main priorities are that it be reliable, cheap on maintenance, gas, and insurance, and have decent mileage. I'm looking to have it for at least 3-5 years before potentially upgrading or keeping it as a second vehicle. I live in Vancouver, BC where it's mild temperatures year-round with a good amount of rain for 8ish months of the year. My budget is roughly $6,000 CAD ($4,400 USD).
I've been scouring Craigslist, Autotrader, and Facebook Marketplace for about a week and have been doing some research as well. I've narrowed my list down to the following vehicles and am hoping to do viewings over the next few days and then make the purchase early next week. I'm not mechanically inclined at all myself but will be bringing along my sibling who is. The vehicles are all sold by private owners, are all automatics, and all have clean titles.
2008 Honda Civic EX-L Coupe: 126,000 km (78,000 mi) for $6,000 CAD ($4,400 USD)/$7,000 CAD ($5,100 USD) with winter tires on rims
2008 Honda Civc Coupe: 140,000 km (87,000 mi) for $5,150 CAD ($3,800 USD)
2010 Mazda 3 Sedan: 101,000 km (63,000 mi) for $5,500 CAD ($4,000 USD)
2010 Kia Forte LX Sedan: 111,000 km (69,000 mi) for $5,300 CAD ($3,900 USD)
2010 Kia Forte Sedan: 150,000 km (93,000 mi) for $5,500 CAD ($4,000 USD)
2013 Kia Rio Sedan: 149,000 km (93,000 mi) for $5,400 CAD ($4,000 USD)
Is buying a CARFAX report worth the $75 CAD? If so, at what point would I buy one (obviously I wouldn't want to buy one for all 6 vehicles)? Are there any common problems with these models/years that I should be looking out for during viewings? Would greatly appreciate any suggestions, recommendations, and advice you have! Thank you in advance!

2020.06.10 18:52 marketingdesigner 2010 Toyota Matrix looks so beautiful to me. I am 30 and this could be my first car.

I lived a frugal living. I've never had my own car. Now that I am turning 30 in a few days, I would like to gift myself a car and liberate myself a little.
I was looking at this 2010 Toyota Matrix with 124k km on it (77k miles) and I think it's in a good condition. clean inside and out, lady driver. However, the millage seems a little high for the price tag of the car (CAD 8200 / USD 6200). They just sent the car for an oil change and inspection.
Any thoughts? am I being cheap again? (I have a problem with this lol) Keep in mind that BC, Canada charges 12% for second-hand vehicle purchases.
https://vancouver.craigslist.org/rch/cto/d/richmond-2010-toyota-matrix/7139012801.html
UPDATE 1:
This may not be as glorious as the Matrix, I found a 2010 Sonata that looks decent as well. 123k km (76k miles) and in a fair condition. The guy told me he changed the brakes last year. Any thoughts? https://vancouver.craigslist.org/nvn/cto/d/north-vancouver-northwest-central-2010/7124169919.html
UPDATE 2:
I heard Pontiac Vibe is practically the same vehicle as Matrix - I am unsure if the owner paid good attention to the car, but I got a candidate for a cheaper price, similar mileage. https://vancouver.craigslist.org/van/cto/d/vancouver-2008-pontiac-vibe-toyota/7137759383.html

2020.05.08 05:42 interwebsuser What's happening with the Vancouver craigslist rental market? An analysis.

I posted this as a comment on a separate thread, but there was a decent amount of positive feedback so I thought I'd turn it into its own post because... Karma? But also, I think it's an important topic and deserves some discussion. Here's the original comment:
-----
For the last few weeks, I've been checking Craigslist every day to see what the housing rental market is doing in Vancouver. Here are my observations so far:
And, I suspect things are just beginning:
The Canadian government reports that more than 150,000 international students were enrolled in public and private postsecondary institutions, elementary and secondary schools and private language training schools in B.C. in 2017.... International students in all institution types are concentrated in Lower Mainland/Southwest institutions (68%) (HESLOP, 2018).
That's ~102,000 int'l students in metro Vancouver. Let's say even HALF of those student leave (or have already left and don't come back) - that's about 50,000 fewer people needing homes come September.
Also...
Short-term rental platform Airbnb says hosts in the city of Vancouver earned $62 million this summer. The company said about 224,000 guests stayed in Airbnb listings in Vancouver between May 24 and Sept. 2 [of 2019], with the typical booking being worth $169... According to the city, as of the end of August there were 5,866 active listings in Vancouver. (Global News, 2019)
That's 224,000 less short term listings, from a total of ~6,000 total units that will be empty.
On top of that, I couldn't find any stats but anecdotally we know that every summer hundreds if not thousands of young professionals on working holiday visas some from the UK, Ireland, Australia, etc. to work in bars, restaurants, and the film industry.
Then, factor in that unemployment in Metro Vancouver was 5.4% in March, expected to grow to ~10% through April. That means 262,000 people out of work, making no money or $2,000 per month from the CERB. Thousands of those people are likely to start breaking their leases to reduce expenses by living with their partners, parents, or room mates. And thousands of these inter-provincial workers and students are abandoning the city to go back to their home cities - and many may never come back.
----
The reason things are slow to drop is that as other users have mentioned, rental prices are "sticky" and not just influenced by immediate supply and demand forces. Just to give two examples of why there would be a lag:
  1. A couple bought a house with a "mortgage helper" suite. Their mortgage was $5,000 per month, and they can't really afford that on their income, but the tiny 1br airbnb basement suite was bringing in ~$2000 per month in extra income (rented out at $180 per night for an average of 12 nights per month). Now, that income is gone. They defer payments for 2 months to give them some time to find someone. Then, they list it on Craigslist for $2,000 for April 1 to try and replace what they were making, but there are no takers. So, they reduce the price to $1,900 for May 1. As of right now, they still have no takers, so they re-list for May 15th for $1,800. But, they literally can't afford to go lower than this; if they can't make at least $1,800 per month off the unit, they won't be able to afford to make their mortgage payments on their income. Some people email them asking about the unit to see if they'll take $1,500, but they hold firm (for now) at $1,800 because they know they can't afford to take less.
  2. A landlord with three buildings (8 total units) has had tenants move out (they moved back to their hometown because they lost their jobs at a restaurant). The tenants were paying $2,500 for a 2br. The landlord lists the place at $2,500 for April 1. No takers, so he re-lists at $2,300 for May 1. Still no one. He does the math; $400 per month is worth $9,600 in rent over two years, and his tenants usually stay for about two years. $9,600 is almost 4 months' rent, so he figures it's worth it to wait up to 4 months at the current price rather than drop it another $200/month just to try to find someone so he holds tight for now. He figures he can always from in June if it's still empty.
In both of these cases, something will give eventually if things don't get better. As more and more tenants miss their rental payment and landlords start to read the writing on the wall, I expect we'll see an even more rapid decrease in rental prices. Some landlords won't be able to get tenants at break-even costs, and will be forced to sell or foreclose (and of course, this will start to have impacts on real estate values). Starting in late summer, the impact of the missing students and int'l workers will really start to kick in. And of course, even as the economy picks back up some people will run out of CERB after 4 months but their jobs won't yet be back online (or they may never come back because the business they worked for went under).
I know this was a LOOOOOOONG post, but I feel like some of these stats and stories are worth keeping in mind as we imagine what's to come. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and we haven't really even BEGUN to feel the economic impacts of this pandemic yet. If I had to put money on it, I'd guess that the current softening is going to get worse and worse, and by the end of the summer or definitely by September, you'll start to see a real, bonafide collapse in YVR real-estate.
tl;dr: Prices have already softened, and there are WAY more rentals out there than usual. Plus, there are about to be 50,000+ fewer international students in Vancouver, 200,000+ tourists who won't visit this summer, thousands of summer holiday visa workers who'll stay away, and a quarter-million locals out of work. It'll be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks, but I strongly suspect we haven't seen the bottom of this yet - not even close.

2020.04.25 09:50 Johnnywalkertrue *Advice* Buying my first set of Carbon Wheels

Hello All!
First, let me say this. If this or a similar question has been posted in another thread please let me know and I will head there.
Last year after deliberating for some time I made the jump and purchased a Cervelo R Series and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I've made. It got me on the road much more and I was able to even complete my first fondo!
Now I'm in the market to buy my first pair of carbon wheels (rim clincher) and I need some advice. I've done a decent amount of research, but it's difficult to find reviews that are not filled with just marketing buzz words.
I live in Vancouver, BC so outside of our triple crown of mountains, its mostly rolling hills so I figured a 35-50mm depth wheel is good. I'm also around 180lbs, so I'm not overly worried about crosswinds. Through a mixture of craigslist and pink bike I've found the following wheelsets
Zipp 303 Firecrest (2017)
Gen 1 Enve 3.4
Campagnolo Bora Ultra 50mm CULT
Easton EC90 Aero55
Mavic Cosmic Pro
Prime Black Edition 50MM
With the exception of the Prime wheelsets, all of these are priced at $1500-$2000 CAD. Is it 'worth' the additional $$$ to get one of these well-known wheelsets? Did the marketing teams win me over? Or are the Prime wheels just fine? I'd love to get any insight to help me make a decision.
Thanks!

So about a month ago I got a gig off Craigslist doing some handyman work at a local college. I was allowed to go in on evenings and weekends so it didn't interfere with my full-time job. About two weeks after starting I invoiced for my hours up until that point about $675. The lady I've been dealing with calls me and says there's a check here for you to pick up and I say okay I'll come down and pick it up. So when I get there she's waiting for me in the lobby and as I step in 2 police officers hop out from a side room they were hiding in put me up against the wall handcuff me and tell me Im under arrest for theft over $5000. Well I am totally freaked out asking what the hell is going on and they say they have me on camera coming into the building at 10pm and Read me my Rights. and asked me if I wanted a lawyer and I of course say yes. At this point they take off the handcuffs tell me I am banned from the building and that I will have to go through the courts to get my money I'm owed. They say there's an investigation ongoing and there will be a warrant issued for my arrest sometime this week. I am so dumbfounded at all of this I didn't ask there names have no paperwork and the contact I have at the school won't return my calls about retrieving my tools that are still there, they also did this in front of people I was supposed to have business dealings with later this year as they wanted me to do some work painting in the summer. This happened about a month ago and I haven't heard a word from anyone including the police. I also got a eviction notice because that money was supposed to pay my rent and have had to turn down jobs because I have no tools to do them with. Any ideas or a point in the right direction would be appreciated. For reference I live in Vancouver,BC Canada. Thanks Reddit users

2020.03.31 06:09 Steelwolf1967 This was the Craziest S#@t ever! Can I sue?

So I got a gig off Craigslist doing handyman work for a college evenings and weekends. I'd go in at night for a few hours as they had given me a pass card and door lock digit code a couple of weeks into it I send in my invoice for about $650 she calls me last Friday and says come in I have your check ready I say great see you around 6pm. When I get there she's waiting in the lobby and opens the door for me, as soon as I step in 2 police officers jump out from a side room put me up against the wall, handcuff me and say I'm under arrest for theft over $5000. They read me my rights I of course say I want a lawyer, at which point they un handcuff me say there's a ongoing investigation and they'll probably have a warrant out for me this week. Then they tell me I have to stay away from the building and the money they owe will have to be taken up with the courts. They did this in front of about 9 people 2 of which I had future business lined up. To top it all off I have recieved a eviction notice because the money from that job was going to pay my rent. The lady I dealt with refuses to call me back regarding my tools that are still there, so I've had to turn down work. I was so dumbfounded at the time I didn't get the cops names or any sort of paperwork. I live in Vancouver BC and would greatly appreciate any advice or pointed in the direction of resources. 2020.03.11 00:45 jasondbg Process of selling an old Donkey Kong 3 cocktail cab

Back in the late 90s I found a Donkey Kong 3 cab on the side of the road, around Vancouver, BC they do a spring cleaning where you can throw out anything you want. I found this unit at that time.
It worked for about an hour that night then got stuck on a white screen which is all that happens when you turn it on now. I think it may have been a bit damp from being outside.
Parents are finally downsizing so I need to find a new home for it and someone that wants to get it repaired. I know it is hard to tell without actually seeing it up close but you do have any idea how much an unworking unit would go for. The coin slot is also damaged on it when I picked it up.
You can get an idea of the general condition of the device here https://imgur.com/GU6tz4X

*editI guess I never really asked a question. What is the best way to sell something like this? Craigslist or is there some other method that may be better.

**Edit 2** And I have found a buyer from here! Thanks everyone it was a huge help.

2020.03.07 01:58 scientized Started Smart Home Installation / Tech support company and need some advice!

I got laid off early last year and decided to start my own company. My formal education is in physics (masters) and I have a tech certification from CompTIA (not important what that is). I have always been extremely interested in tech, handyman stuff, computers, and all that stuff.
Anyway, I decided to start this smart home installation / computer services company which has been going pretty good. I made a pretty stellar website and have been advertising on Google and Craigslist.
My physics education gave me a lot of hands on experience playing around with electronics and a good understanding of electricity which def helps. I also have good research skills -- so any problem I run into on the job I can usually solve by reading an article or something.
What started out as fixing simple printer issues or installing wifi networks is turning more into installing transformers for doorbells, common wires for smart thermostats, TV mounting / moving the outlet to behind the TV, speaker installation in newbuilds, and stuff of that nature.
So my questions are:
(1) What license (if any) do I need to perform low-voltage work. I can not find anything online in my city [Vancouver, Canada]. (2) What liabilities do I need to worry about, and what insurance should I get? I am not a licensed trade person, can I even get insurance for the work I am performing (e.g. mounting a TV). (3) Can I not touch anything high-voltage with being a licensed electrician? Like moving a receptacle? (4) Would getting incorporated remove some liability from me? Should I do this? (5) Currently I am a sole-proprietorship and in BC you don't need to charge / pay GST if you make under 30K a year. I will most likely exceed that in the next couple months. Does this mean I should start charging GST now? Does this include parts and labour? Example: I charge $100 for computer repair (labour)-- I should charge $100 + GST. What if I need to buy a part on Amazon and they charge GST and PST. How should I pass on that tax to the consumer? Do I need a pst exempt number and just charge the tax to the customer -- what about the GST then, wouldn't that mean the part gets taxed twice? (6) Does anyone know if there is any formal training on smart-home automation systems?
I am really trying to be as legitimate and professional as possible but am getting a tad overwhelmed with liability scares, tax, and what not.
Thank you kindly

2020.02.21 23:15 sethman78 Weller 12 y/o Worth It?

Hey everyone. I’ve been into bourbon for a few years but since I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada the overall bourbon selection is very limited. I haven’t had a chance to try a ton of different “hard to find” bourbons. Anyways, on a recent trip to California I found a bottle of Weller 12 year old for $35USD. A few whiskey friends of mine have suggested I sell the bottle as I could probably get a decent price for it up here. So is Weller 12 that good? Should I keep and drink it or flip it for too $? I briefly listed on Craigslist and got a couple of interested buyers at $400CDN (about $300usd). But I really hate the idea of flipping a bottle for a profit.

2020.01.24 22:08 Timekeepsonslippin Need help/advice deciding on bike purchase and accessories.

Here's one particular ad I'm wondering about, is it a good deal? This is in Canadian dollars.
Link - https://vancouver.craigslist.org/van/bid/d/vancouver-fully-tunedcrusader-head/7059179778.html
Found it from this website: http://www.rideon.com/used-bikes-vancouve
Which led to this set of listings: https://vancouver.craigslist.org/search/sss?userid=126690381
I'm on the North Shore of Vancouver BC, and would like to avoid having to travel to a lot of different shops before settling on something (would likely be busing).
I'm in no rush to buy, and I've several hundred to spend. Would rather get a good deal than get one quickly (I'd be willing to wait a while). This is the only shop's bikes I've looked at so far in my city (anywhere in Vancouver including North/West/East), I imagine it would be smart to keep looking to get a good grasp on all of my options. Don't really want to deal with Craigslist and the risk of buying stolen goods, or a lemon, and not having the greatest.. warranty from the seller. I also wouldn't know for sure if the bike fits me properly.
Besides the bike, I'll need at least a helmet I believe. Reflectors, a light (should probably make a list), a bell to warn pedestrians/cars? Should I buy things like replacement brake pads, a bike pump with a gauge, a repair kit & tools, or anything else I might need for a bike, assuming I have nothing? Was considering some sort of bike rack or method of keeping the bike upright at home as well, maybe some kind of cheap/simple one where the tires are on the ground? Would I be just as well off using the kickstand (perhaps I'd want more stability for doing repairs/maintenance at home)?
It's often rainy here, smart to get mud guards? Might shop online assuming it would be cheaper that way for things besides the bike (instead of buying them at the shop). Should I buy certain things for the bike at the shop to make sure they fit, like maybe the mud guards? Maybe buy some towels specifically for drying the bike off after riding, and some things to apply to certain parts to prevent rust/corrosion, and keep the parts greased up/oiled? Not sure if I should buy clothing specifically for riding, or if I'd be okay for now using my regular clothes.
The bike will be both for exercise and transportation. Would like it to be reliable (doesn't need constant maintenance due to low quality components) and not super expensive (either to buy or maintain). I don't mind if it's used as long as it's been taken care of before my purchase by someone knowledgeable at a shop. Not sure if I'd prefer a hybrid or road bike (road bikes being lighter is nice), but I mostly used mountain bikes as a kid, and drop handlebars I've pretty much never used (I'd be willing to consider getting used to them.. though the posture I imagine I'd be in on such a bike does not seem appealing, and might be the dealbreaker). I think I'd prefer flat pedals over clipless.
I'm assuming the people at the shop can help me make sure I'm the right fit for the bike in terms of my height and such, or should I do my own measurements? Not sure exactly what I'd need to measure. I read one review of a shop saying they were sold a bike with handlebars that were too wide for their body, and were making their arms numb or something.
I guess that's all for now (I realize this is quite a bit, just trying to make sure I don't neglect anything important), thank you!

2019.12.30 20:55 Retrowrath How to rent an apartment

Hi, My family can no longer afford to rent the current place we are staying at. I am helping my mom who doesn’t speak English look for a place to rent (craigslist). This is my first time and I don’t want to mess this up. I have contacted a few places of interest. We live in Vancouver BC
How should I proceed? What kind of questions should I ask?
What I think so far: - Ask if the person is the owner - What form of payment is required and what’s the frequency - When can I move in
Thank you in advance!
