2020.11.29 22:51 myfairkatie95 I (25F) need some advice about dating someone (27M) with a kid (4F)

If this has been covered in other posts, please just point me in that direction!
Me (25F) and let's call him John (27M) have been dating for eight months. I knew he had a daughter from the start, though I didn't realize that things were going to get serious when we started seeing each other. However, he's a really great and considerate guy, so I decided to give being exclusive with him a chance. Some background, I am in grad school and he is working on his undergraduate and also works part-time. John and his ex (Lena, 27?F) divorced about threeish years ago, they do not have an official custody arrangement. As of now, he picks her up from Lena's house in the mornings to take her to daycare and gets her on Monday and Tuesday evenings.
I ended up meeting River pretty soon after we became exclusive since her daycare shut down for a while due to the pandemic and since John only works part-time on the weekends, he looks after River while Lena is at work. John didn't tell Lena about me and she ended up finding out that about me through River, which I know isn't great. She set a new rule back in May that I couldn't be around River until she met me, which is a totally reasonable thing to ask! However, she has refused to meet me despite my bf's requests, and it is now almost December. John has told me that one of the reasons they got divorced was that she was very controlling, so it's clear to me that she's using this leverage she has as River's mom to still control John's life, and by proxy, mine as well.
I have struggled with a little jealousy when he has River due to feeling left out. Because of the pandemic, I don't really hang out with anyone else other than my bf and his roommates, so when I'm not allowed to hang out, I just sit alone in my apartment. It sucks.
I have a couple of questions:
River's daycare is now closed for winter break (which lasts about two months), which means John has her every day during the day. Our plan was to give Lena one last shot to meet me before I just hang around River anyway. Is this a good plan? If I'm still not allowed to be around her, I only get to see my boyfriend at night after he gets done at work.
John clearly wants some boundaries around my relationship with River, but neither of us knows what that looks like. Neither of us wants me to be her stepmom, but I want to hang out with both of them (once it's kosher). How do I hang out with my boyfriend and his daughter without it seeming like I'm trying to insert myself into their family dynamic? How do I deal with/avoid feelings of jealousy when he just wants "family time?" Just to be clear, I totally understand that River should come first! If he was putting my needs above hers often, that would be a red flag to me. I have plenty of thoughts about his parenting style, but I try my hardest to keep them to myself.
River is still pretty young, so John doesn't really want to explain our relationship to her. I see this relationship lasting long-term. John had terrible experiences with step parents when his parents remarried, so he's hesitant about...a lot. Should I just remain "John's friend" to River?
TLDR: My (25F) boyfriend (27M) has a controlling ex-wife and young daughter and I need some help navigating this tricky terrain.

2020.11.26 07:13 scamperdo Reconciling the Takoma Park House with Red being the real Katarina

Reconciling the Takoma Park House with Redarina

In this post, I'll lay out how I reconciled the dialogue and events at 1.07's Takoma House scenes with the theory Red's true identity is the real Katarina Rostova, Dom's daughter.

Dom and Lena Raised Katarina In America

3.20 Artax Network episode introduced Dom, Katarina Rostova's father. We learned Dom, like many "grieving" parents, had saved his beloved daughter's childhood toys and momentos. As these items were clearly American, this served as our first clue Katarina Rostova was raised in America.
Over the following seasons it was revealed Dom was Oleander, a Russian KGB agent. Evidence suggests Dom operated undercover for a time in the USA, during which time he created a contingency plan which included the House in the Woods. By late 1990/early 1991 we heard Dom was residing in Moscow.
In S6, through Ressler's dogged investigation and Dom's Rassvet story, we finally were introduced to Katarina's mother, Lena. The evidence points to Lena residing in the USA in late 1990/early 1991. Ressler also found proof Lena remarried and remained in the USA until her death.
As there's no evidence or accusation Lena committed bigamy, one can deduce Dom and Lena divorced some time before the late 1990/early 1991. We do not know the cause of their breakup. We only know Dom rarely mentioned his ex-wife while appeared obsessed over losing Katarina, his pride and joy.
Had Russian émigré Lena served as Dom's cover story during his early years spying on the USA for KGB? As Constantin provided Katarina with her cover story?
Since I personally don't believe Dom and Lena ever resided together at the House in the Woods, I looked for clues to any other houses introduced that might fit their home.
The Case For Takoma Park House Being Katarina's Childhood Home
Approximately 5 miles northwest from Washington, DC, lies the suburb of Takoma Park, Maryland.
"In the mid-to-late 1960s, the future Mayor and civil rights activist Sammie Abbott led a campaign to halt freeway construction and replace it with a Metrorail line to the site of the former train station, and worked with other neighborhood groups to halt plans for a wider system of freeways going into and out of DC.
This controversy also raised the profile of Takoma Park at a time in the late 1960s and 1970s when it was becoming noted regionally and nationally for political activism outside the Nation's capital, with newspaper commentators describing it as "The People's Republic of Takoma Park" or "The Berkeley of the East".[28] This era of activism extended into the 1980s, when Takoma Park declared itself a Nuclear-free zone and a sanctuary for Salvadoran and Guatemalan refugees."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takoma_Park,_Maryland#Late_20th_and_early_21st_century
A hotbed of far left political activists and a city likely filled with many federal commuters, could have provided fertile ground for KGB infiltration.
Red: Strange. I remember it being bigger.
This is not an uncommon sentiment expressed by adults returning to their childhood home decades later.
Luli: I don’t understand. Of all the places Marigot, Doha, Florence, Seychelles why this place?
This line is critical in establishing that, unlike Dembe, Luli had not been trusted with all of Red's secrets.
Red: I raised my family in this house.
This line has often been held up as irreconcilable with the Redarina theory.
Yet that assertion does not allow for Red giving Luli a misleading answer with the intent to keep his true identity secret. I think that's a mistake because 7+ seasons has taught me the truthfulness of Red's statements about his past relies on whom he was speaking to.
I put this line in the same category as Red's bloody Christmas sob story told to Madeline Pratt, a woman he clearly distrusted and wanted to con.
When speaking alone to Dembe, Ilya and Dom, one can mostly trust Red's statements about his past. With everyone else, I put it in the needs corroboration pile.
Luli: It’s lovely.

Bubble Girl

Red then ripped a piece of paneling from the wall to find where a child’s height had been penciled. The marks look to have stopped at about 3.5 years old.
I think the age holds the most important clue in this entire scene. Who was this child?
I eliminated Katarina as her Artax toys mostly dated older.
Dom claimed to have met and known little Masha. Katarina also appeared close and in touch with her mother. Katarina could have taken little Masha on visits to her parents who were still living together in the Takoma Park House from 1985-1989.
Red: No, it’s not, but it used to be.
Red looked out the window and had a vision of little girl in the yard blowing bubbles.
Little Masha could have blown super-bubbles on a sunny day on her last visit to her grand-parents' home.
Dembe: Time to go.
Red: Did you prepare everything the way I asked?
Luli: This place must hold a lot of memories for you.

Red: I spend every day trying to forget what happened here. This should help.

Some have tied this line to the bloody Christmas story.
However, if Takoma Park was Red's childhood home, then these words take on a new meaning.
The one true statement I believe Fakerina made about her past was the bitter condemnation of Dom sending her out at age 15 to seduce targets. After all, Dom admitted in Rassvet to pimping out his own daughter to seduce the real Reddington for intel, so he would have felt no compunction about grooming other young protégé such as Fakerina.
From Rassvet flashback to Red's death row loving words about his mother, it appeared Katarina had a loving relationship with Lena, while a volatile and a complicated one with her spymaster father. Not all her young memories were made of "glitter and puppy dog tails." She was a difficult child Red recalled on death row.
And, perhaps, the reason Masha's height measurements abruptly ended at 3.5 years old was Lena and Dom's marriage exploded and fell apart that year. If Lena, like Kirk, had been clueless to her role as a cover story, she would have been devastated when the truth came out and chosen to walk out on Dom. Lena did appear in Rassvet to understand her daughter was a spy while there's no evidence she herself was KGB or held any loyalty to the Soviets. Perhaps Katarina's last unhappy memory of her childhood home was her parents' breakup over secrets and lies.
To my recollection, Dom never discussed with Red Katarina's mother nor his marriage to Lena. Dom did not appear to harbor any personal bitterness about his ex-wife when speaking with Liz about her either.
After their marriage broke up, Dom could have packed up and moved his prized piano, some personal belongings and yes, Katarina and Masha's toys and drawings, to a house he secretly purchased as his contingency plan. Dom then could have returned to Moscow or been recalled.
This theory would address the many questions of how Dom wound up with Katarina's toys and some of his Russian belongings after fleeing his flat in the dead of the night.
Did Red/Katarina blow up her childhood home because the home was built on secrets and falsehoods?

2020.11.24 00:18 Throwaway20131092 You know, I think I am obsessed with Annihilation because I do not understand it.

Yes, I am posting twice. I want to fit more in and I have the time. Anyway, it’s ironic I’m obsessed as Lena in the book is obsessed at what lies at the bottom of this massive tower that the shimmer, Area X, has created. I guess also because there is no answer, most things if you do not understand you can learn about it. And if it’s something abstract like alien life or what happens when we die, then there are many theories but only a few that are actually reasonable. Annihilation, it’s a film based off a person’s dream of an extremely trippy novel which itself is from the POV of a journal kept by the protagonist who is an unreliable narrator due to many different things and that’s without thinking if she meant something different or lied in this journal. So yeah, there is naturally going to be a lot of questions. This film had broken my brain because I do not understand it, yet still really enjoy it. Btw, the writedirector of Annihilation, Alex Garland, also wrote 28 days later and sunshine (the latter is pretty good which is why I bring it up so watch it). I believe Folding Ideas and Actolytes of Horror video’s have got closest to describing it. I’m trying to read a metaphorical film literally but because it’s so abstract there’s a million different possibilities that could all be in play at once. Unlike US which literally doesn’t make much sense, but metaphorically does. Annihilation is to abstract for its ambiguity to be linear like the ending to Inception say. However my brain cannot process it being metaphorical so I have to take it all literally and as it is, nor as symbols and meanings. And so, I’m forever lost, wandering around in the sunken place so to speak, never being able to grasp it. And I still really fucking love the movie.
It’s not the only film I’ve thought long and hard about, but I think even after a lifetime of study I’d still be no closer to nailing anything down. Tho I think the film I’ll be thinking about a lot is Lake Mungo, I rewatched it again tonight. It still fucks me up. Definitely the best ghost film out there, yes better then the grand daddy the sixth sense. You should watch Lake Mungo, if you go onto fullmoviesonyoutube and type in Lake Mungo, you can see it. Keep an open mind and take it for what it is. Tho I am certain the brother killed Alice which explains a fair amount, pretty sure he drowned her or something like that. And yes, there is a post credit scene, and yes, it’s a sad ending. They move on but Alice is still there. They just don’t realise that. Hence why she was still turning up in all that footage.
I am certain Sam is lying to me and is only using me as a resource for money. He doesn’t care about me and I’m certain he finds me embarrassing or something, hence why he isn’t interested in me buying him food via my college card. I am near certain he is still going to Norway and is sending her money, tho I just have this feeling she is sending that money onto someone else. This isn’t my paranoia, tho it is, but I am certain of this despite there not being much proof at my end. I know I cannot proof it, but Ik I am right, everything just fits and all hints towards it.
I should explain and give examples of my paranoia and my aforementioned blending of reality, see, when I think of things, they happen. Say I’m thinking of Sam, and then in that moment I get a message from him, same with Shania and Instagram. I saw Lydia today with that Tom asshole, on Moulsham street; she doesn’t live in Chelmsford and it’s difficult for her to get here, she lives fairly fucking far away. Are they the ones dating? I thought she had a boyfriend but with someone else? But what are the chances they are there when I’m coming along in the car? At that very moment in time when it’s not even a college day? Lots of things like this keep happening. A few a day, fine; Fucking coincidence it is then. But 10+? No. I refuse to believe it. Something is going on. I don’t know what, but it’s all falling apart. This isn’t the first time, after a while it finds a equilibrium and everything settles again. Idk if it is happening more this time or idc enough to notice it all and takes notes or even count. There’s a lot going on, there’s something in the attic, my face isn’t my face, how much is Sam lying to me and how much danger and/or debut is he in? Why was Lydia there today? I was in the nearest college campus for over an hour and she never went to it, plus she was heading away from the city centre and all modes of transport out and all easy pick up points too. Is there something up with Shane? My brother’s friend, something about him, his voice, rubbed me the wrong way. Seems like a totally normal guy, it’s just in relation to my brother is where I feel uncomfortable. How aware are the college of my depression and suicidal tendencies? I did ask a little while ago to see a councillor, they redirected me to an online form which I have never filled in. They need reasons why and symptoms, chances are I’d just put a link to this account. But that is where the problem lies. I can’t be 100% honest cause then it all goes to shit, if I tell her thatI’m thinking of killing myself on Sunday, possibly next Monday. Also how much would she tell the college of what I say? All of it? And finally, is it going to be online? If I were to do it, it’s need to be face to face. Can’t talk at home, out loud especially in daytime hours about any of this. That’s why I haven’t asked the college for help. NHS is full to the brim and waiting list is a million miles long, and again probably wouldn’t be face to face. Plus a lot harder to keep a secret. And then, after that, there is nothing else. No help whatsoever. Leaving me typing everything on here for you to read.
The world has gone to shit and my mind has gone to mush.
I just want it to end. For this all to stop. Do I deserve this? For what I’ve done? Can’t confess to it all. Some of you know some sins. Some sins I have done to you or effect you personally. Other have been inflicted on random people. I don’t ever forget, details and some parts yes. But never the feeling of responsibility and the guilt go my actions and crimes. I do feel bad for it all. I am not a sociopath or psychopath in this respect. Ofc Ik this offers no crumb or any comfort to you; but Ik that if I knew the people who have wronged me felt really fucking bad about it, it’d help. Very little, but it would. Still kill the majority of them on sight if I could be absorbed of consequences but that’s life.
Think I had a nightmare last night, really weird one about a time loop and being stuck in certain places while previous iterations of my person’s dad stalked him and something else. It was really strange. I better be off to bed, gotta be in college by nine and I am tired as fuck.

2020.11.22 21:58 tutetibiimperes Nugu Roundup #66 - Get on the Gavy Train - 201122 + Final Album Giveaway of 2020

Hello and welcome to the latest Nugu Roundup!
What is this?: This is a weekly feature designed to highlight the unknown/underappreciated groups and soloists working hard in the Kpop world that often fall under the radar. Please share your own information, favorite performance videos, fanmeet stories, or anything else relevant below!
Last week we took a look at the super-nugu boy group Block Chain. This week I'd like to explore a group who I've loved for quite a while, but have been hesitant to feature for a variety of reasons. Depending on how closely you follow Korean vocal/ballad groups you may not consider them to be nugu at all, after all, they've been around since 2005. At the same time, looking through the history of posts in the subreddit their music and news has received very little attention, so I'm going to go with the 'nugu at least to the western Kpop audience' definition with them. Their music also trends towards a more 'Korean adult contemporary' vibe than traditional Idol music, but as I've featured bands that also diverge from that path in the past, and since it's autumn, which is a great time to listen to ballads, I felt y'all might be open to learning about and exploring the discography of Gavy NJ! (fans of more upbeat stuff don't despair though - they certainly have some more upbeat and fun tracks as well!) (due to the amount of content for this week's featured group there will be no soloist of the week or In Memoriam this week)
Look at the first comment below for the winner of the twentieth (and final of 2020) Nugu Roundup Album Giveaway, plus details on this week's album up for grabs!
What is Nugu?: While in Korean it literally means 'Who' in the broader Kpop context it refers to groups that are generally unknown amongst the greater public. It doesn't have to mean they're extremely new, though it can, and there are of course varying degrees of 'unknown' which some groups having very strong niche fandoms and others being almost invisible. I take a fairly broad view and will include groups that may be known to some, but who don't have widespread name recognition.
Let's get on with the show...

GAVY NJ
Who are they?: A three member vocal/ballad girl group under GoodFellas Entertainment. They debuted in 2005 (and are in fact celebrating their 15th anniversary this month). Their name came from combining the family names of the three original members (none of whom are still members of the group). Their fandom name is Happiness. Despite their long running time as a group, and while they have had some membership changes, there have only been a total of seven members, including the current three, in the 15 year history of the group.
Company: GoodFellas Entertainment has represented Gavy NJ since 2010, previously the group had with Berry Good Entertainment and Vitamin Entertainment. GoodFellas was founded by the group's primary producer Min Kyung Ki and also represents male vocal groups The Postmen and 6 to 8 as well as soloist Ara.

Random Stuff:
Trivia: The group says part of the secret to their longevity is that they have many breakup songs and that many women like to listen to breakup songs after the break up. The members have individual YouTube channels with: Gunji, Seorin, and Jenny. Despite the line up changes and the many years of activity plus experimentations with new sounds the current members say the soul of the original group still lives within them and that there will always be a distinctive character to the group's sound. The group faced some controversy that their title track Lie was similar to Jennifer Lopez's Brave (which paradoxically was more popular in South Korea than the United States). The group came close to a music show win with their 2009 comeback Love Story but unfortunately it was competing with the utter-domination of SNSD's Gee, so the group had to settle for a second-place showing. Likewise the group has flirted with major chart success at various points in the past, with their first two albums reaching within the top-ten on the Gaon Album Charts, and once more with their Sunflower EP. Their peak single positions have been at 11 on the Gaon Charts with Sunfower and You Are Not the Man. Their debut album was their best seller with over 60,000 copies sold, however their physical sales have dwindled with the last several releases failing to eclipse 1,000 sales each despite the quality of their music being better than ever.

While the idea that telling the nobles would result in a hefty reward is an attractive one, you have to accept that it’s not that likely. More probably you’d be pressed into helping them solve their demon problem, and would find yourself among the first casualties involved. You may have more value than the average commoner, but you lack the noble blood that would protect you from their schemes. The zealots at the temple won’t like you, and they won’t pay you, but their response will be predictable and right now that works in your favour.
“We’re headed for Narrik,” you tell Lena. “The zeal—the followers of a Guardian Spirit are the sworn enemy of the demons and their cultists. They’ll be eager to help deal with the problem.”
A look of deep concern appears on Lena’s face, and she tugs her silver hair with obvious worry. “You do remember I’m an Irregular, right? We’re not exactly popular with the firebrands—especially not the second-generation kind, like me.”
“I see,” you reply, thinking of another approach. You had only been considering the bad-blood between the Spellborn and any given religious sect, but Spellborn among the nobility had done an excellent job in keeping the peace. That probably couldn’t be said for Irregulars, who were much rarer. Everyone carries a Stiga within their soul, and while Irregulars are the result of a failed awakening—and can therefore never become an Aberration—their descendants are more likely to undergo an awakening and will always evolve into an even greater threat. Religious groups do not officially consider Irregulars as innately evil, but rather view them as its harbingers, and it seems the difference is rarely taken into account.
“I’m not saying we don’t go to them,” says Lena as she likewise thinks things over. “Just don’t bring my powers into it. Since Narrik is my hometown, you can say I’m acting as your guide. How did you figure out we were dealing with a demon?”
You quickly explain how you summoned a primal spirit to investigate the area, and that its experience had answered a lot of questions. The revelation that you were summoning spirits while she was asleep seems to disturb her a little, but for the moment she doesn’t address the matter. “Then,” she says, “just say you were using spirits to search for your ship. Maybe one didn’t come back, so the next one investigated further, and figured out why. Do they have any way to prove that one way or the other?”
You shake your head. “It’d be pretty hard without relying on a clairvoyant. No doubt they’ll also be gloating that a Spellborn needed to come to them for help, so I hope they’ll overlook a lot of the more detailed questions. At the very least they’ll know that a Spellborn wouldn’t be working with a demon by choice.”
“Then that’s the plan,” she says. “The less I’m involved in your story, the less likely you are to trigger my death.”
Although Lena is mainly concerned about her own well-being, you have to agree that this seems like the best plan for contacting the dominant clergy in Narrik. She’s also good enough to explain what she knows of the spirit they worship—the regional Guardian named Nephora—and the general practices of her temple in Narrik. Her followers paint her as representing the duality of life and death, but your master educated you against such fanciful thinking. The Guardians of Galea may be in direct competition with each other, but they have used the human concept of branding to differentiate themselves from one another. From a purely functional point of view, one Guardian spirit is the same as the next, but this is not the kind of opinion you want to advertise if you want their followers to help you.
You leave Whitewall while it’s still dark, in the early hours of the morning when the streets are still asleep. Departing by boat isn’t possible on your schedule, which will slow your journey down a little, but the longer you delay the more likely members of the town guard will start asking you difficult questions.
Walking the edge of the lake isn’t such a bad experience anyway. You manage to get a ride with a travelling farmer or fisherman at points, but for the most part you and Lena make the journey by foot. She proves herself a capable forager, with a surprising knowledge of the edible and medicinal herbs in the area, while you are the talented hunter you’ve always been. It’s practically impossible for those who share their food, their travels, and their existential threats to remain distanced from each other, and while you’re not about to bed the woman it’s clear that any hard feelings have softened by the time the walls of Narrik crest the horizon—at the very least you no longer think Lena will betray you at the earliest opportunity. If you’re being honest with yourself, you have to admit you’d think twice before doing the same to her as well, and you have to keep reminding yourself that the only reason she’s here is to help you deal with the problem on the Ru Talore. Unfortunately she has been unable, and deeply unwilling, to use her talents to check on the ship a second time, and you ran out of powdered arcanite three days ago.
“You know,” she says as the roadside buildings begin to get more frequent, “those walls were built by the Demon Kings. They’re the only surviving walls like that in eastern Galea.”
“Not the only ones,” you reply as you regard them thoughtfully. You wonder if the demon might have some plans for this place, given the surviving walls and the presence of a population.
Lena gives you a strange look. “No, everybody knows it’s true.”
“There are others in the Riftlands,” you tell her, although you’re relying on your master’s first-hand knowledge for this. “I’ve never seen them myself, though. I’m not suicidal.”
“Those don’t count!” she retorts. “Normal people can’t live there!”
“I was just saying that there are still standing ruins of the Demon Era in the Riftlands,” you reply. “I’m not the one making up the rules for if they ‘count’ or not. Hopefully we don’t have to pass through these ones to get to the temple, though?”
“It’s just outside the walls,” says Lena, dropping the argument. “They need people to be able to get to them without spending a fortune on buying entry to the walled area.”
Obviously because that fortune is better placed with the temple, though you’re not about to say that sort of thing out loud. “That’s very generous of them.”
“Yeah,” agrees Lena, likewise saying nothing out loud, though the two of you share a knowing smile. You haven’t found a lot you agree on, but neither of you think much of the temples or their members.
Narrik is a bustling city by the standards of south-eastern Galea, and nobody gives the two of you a second look as you proceed down the main streets towards the largest temple you can pick out. By habit you shoot a glance towards the skydocks, checking to see if there are any ships you recognise, only to hurry Lena out of sight when you spot a familiar form.
“What are you doing?!” she demands as you shove her into a narrow alleyway. “We’re almost at the temple!”
“I think I just saw the Ru!” you tell her in a low voice.
She stares at you in shock. “You’re sure?”
“Not entirely,” you admit. “The docks are pretty far away, and I know she’s not the only one with that build, or those colours in her trim, but...”
“We should assume the worst,” Lena finishes. “I guess I can think of a few options for what we can do next.”
You nod. “Go ahead.”
“If this thing is worried about you going to get help from the temples, it probably has people looking for you,” she says. “If it were me, I’d be hiring locals to keep an eye out so that you wouldn’t even know they were there, and you’d be killed before you could set foot in the temple. It’s possible they’ve already seen us, but we haven’t yet fallen into their trap, in which case they’d be scrambling to adapt.”
“That’s remarkably insightful for a travelling fortune-teller,” you reply suspiciously.
“I told you my mother was a travelling fortune-teller,” she retorts, “I never said anything about what I did with them. In summary I wouldn’t suggest we go to the temple ourselves, but we can try to use the same approach to confirm that’s the Ru Talore, and even to get in contact with the priests. We could even buy some more arcanite so you can get a spirit to check things out for you. We can also do both, but time is probably an issue.”
Those are some pretty decent ideas, but you could also try going to a dockside tavern to get the same kind of information. Bringing Lena with you, however, is probably going to draw more attention than you’d like.
Do you:
  1. Take Lena’s suggestion to enlist some local help to find out about the ship you saw, and get in touch with the priests.
  2. Take Lena’s suggestion to go shopping for powdered arcanite and get a spirit to do your legwork.
  3. Take your time and do both of Lena’s suggestions.
  4. Split up with Lena and hit the nearest Skyrunner tavern. She seems to know what she’s doing, so she can go find some local help for contacting the priests while you check in with the Skyrunners.

You selected:
2. Get a night of sleep, and hope that Lena will have recovered enough by morning to make things easy. At least this gives you time to think about where to go next.
---
You’d be hard pressed to think of a more challenging day. Fighting for your life, cleaning up a crime scene, hiding in a house of ill-repute, and confronting your intended assassin was more than you’d want in a week, let alone several hours. It’s unlikely you’d be able to carry on much longer, even if you didn’t have to worry about Lena, and this room is a better place to rest than the side of a country road.
Lena barely responds to a gentle shake of her shoulders, and eventually you simply lift her up and place her on the bed. You give her the benefit of the covers, and rest on the other side of the bed while she drifts into a restless sleep. You can’t help but note how close you came to fulfilling her vision within hours of meeting her, and hardly a good omen for things to come. Especially when you consider where you’ll be heading.
Darkness slowly descends on Whitewall as you make your plans over the last of your food. Though the excitement of the moment has long passed, it has been replaced with a growing tension and sense of unease. The Ru Talore is most likely hiding in the forests to the north-east of Halica—probably just far enough away from the magelines so that other Skyrunner ships won’t notice them—and it’s a lot of ground to cover by foot. You also have the sense that, by going there, you’ll be entering the dragon’s maw. Going alone would be very stupid, and Lena, with the exception of her gift, isn’t likely to be much help.
You’re going to need some allies, and you don’t have much time to find them. Given your status as fugitives, you don’t think you should spend any further time in Whitewall, but the capital may be a different story. Failing that, the people of Halica may be interested in the return of the young Countess.
It’s not much of a plan, but it’s the best you can manage for the time being. Lacking anybody of highborn status, you can’t even access the Academy’s library to narrow down what attacked Lena—you can assume is that it was no mortal creature, though that doesn’t help as much as you’d like. Your background in fighting Spirits is minimal, and your experience against Aberrations and the Eldritch is non-existent.
Wary as you are about the denizens of the Shroud, summoning one might be the only way you’re going to get any answers, and possibly any protection. Spirits aren’t exactly reliable—even if they’re not outright hostile to the summoner—and the last time you did this you had your master to guide you, so trying it by yourself in a dark room does not fill you with much confidence. Fortunately you have Lis’ handbook to help figure out the parts you don’t remember, so it shouldn’t turn into a complete disaster, and there’s plenty powdered arcanite if you need to make more than one attempt.
Even so, you make sure you spend a few solid hours reading by moonlight and missing the simple convenience of lumic wires—with the abundance of energy on a mageline, you don’t recall ever having to squint aboard the Ru. Given the low cost of such things, you can only guess that the reason for their absence is that these rooms aren’t intended to serve as actual accommodation.
You remove yourself from the bed and sit on the chest instead. It’s not as comfortable, but at least it doesn’t make you wonder if it’s ever been washed.
As tired as you are, you push through until after midnight, working on getting the magic circuits as precise as you can, given the limitations of arcanite powder. There’s nothing beautiful about it, but you think it should be functional and don’t hesitate in channelling power into its core.
The room lights up with the pale illumination as the energy builds, forming an orb of stable power in the centre of the room. It oscillates with a steady rhythm as it grows in size, and your surroundings resonate with its changes. Eventually the ritual nears its completion, and you sense the world responding.
The echoes of the world grow stronger as the power seeps into them. Here on a mageline it is easiest to bring forth an astral spirit, one of the primals whose very essence is based on magic itself, though you don’t require one of great power. The spirit that emerges is small, but intelligent, and prefers to remain solely within the Shroud. A few minutes are all it needs to absorb the memory of its surroundings, quickly learning everything it needs to know of this town and, somewhat more objectionably, this room.
Primal spirits are not inclined to judge, however, and it mainly looks at you with a sense of anticipation. The question appears in your mind, more a concept than a set of words. Purpose?
You close your eyes and focus, recalling the area around Halica and the appearance of the Ru Talore. It is still a simple creature with little understanding of the world around it, so you impress a need to find the ship and give its location relative to other landmarks in the area.
Knowing its duty, the spirit steps back into the depths of the Shroud and vanishes from the room. The glow of magic is gone, leaving only the moonlight to keep you company, and you fall asleep while you wait for your answer.
There’s no way to know how long you sleep for, but it’s still dark when you wake up and your body has only had enough time to get a little bit sore from discomfort. The spirit has returned and, rather than rousing you, has simply waited for you to wake up on your own—just the expected level of passive aggression.
“Answer?” you whisper as you regain awareness of your surroundings. The room is even darker than it was before, with little moonlight filtering in through the window. Whatever remains still reflects off Lena’s mess of silver hair, which almost seems to glow in the pale light. The sounds from the rest of the inn are few, but are carnal in nature, and there’s nothing but silence from the street.
Found, the Spirit thinks at you, and presses its discoveries into your mind at the same time. Although its senses are alien, most of what your master taught you about spirits was how to sort through their mess of thoughts to find what you actually needed. You can’t be exact, but you know they were anchored northwest of Halica in the shadow of one of the foothills. More importantly you notice the hot glow of a Spellborn inside the foothill itself—likely some kind of cave—along with a disgusting miasma the spirit purposefully avoided. You are relieved to see that the Ru’s heart is still beating, but a powerful presence can be seen at its side, draining its strength like a parasite.
With its duty performed, the spirit flitters away in the Shroud to enjoy the rest of its life, leaving you to contemplate its experience. It doesn’t take you long to put all the pieces together—while the spirit kept its distance from the ship, its observations are enough to confirm your fears.
There are three types of spirit in this world. Primal spirits, such as the one you summoned, are ephemeral creatures with few motivations and are an extension of the world itself. Guardian spirits, particularly those revered by the major religions, are those who enter into a mutually beneficial arrangement with their followers. Needless to say, it’s neither of those.
You give Lena a firm shake. “Wake up. We can’t stay here.”
She flinches under your touch, and wakes with a start. You give her a moment to calm down. “Wha... what? What’s happening?”
“That thing you saw was a demon,” you tell her. “It’s probably coming for us, so we need to move.”
“A demon?” she asks uncertainly, and you recall that most people don’t know much about about spirits of any kind. Lena shudders, then locks eyes with you. “Why is there a demon on your ship?!” she demands. “Don’t tell me you made a deal with it?”
“I’m a Spellborn, I don’t need to borrow my power,” you reply coldly. “It probably made a deal with that fucking Lender. That explains why it knew who I was, but it doesn’t tell me what it’s doing.”
You also don’t know how long it’s been since Lender made a deal; those who make a covenant with demons or guardians don’t glow in the Shroud, though nor can they see it. You don’t relay this fact to Lena.
“You think it’s coming here?!” she asks quietly, paling at the thought.
“Look,” you say, “all I know is that these things ruled the world for three thousand years. Their time only ended because we got lucky and poisoned the source of their power. Any of them who survived are wiley, determined, and very, very experienced. That thing is smart enough to know that its plans could be ruined if it doesn’t take us down quickly. The fact is we have no way of knowing whether it located us.”
Lena glances to the moonlit window. “How long?”
“A day and a half if it needs to get here physically,” you say. “No time at all if it can send another spirit. One spirit can’t summon another—at least not directly—and Lender was never an academic. That doesn’t mean the demon won’t have more competent help.”
Staring at you for a moment, Lena slips a key into your hand. “Take this and go to the room next door,” she says. “Take everything you want from the chest—you already took care of the owners. I’ll be ready to go by the time you’re done.”
You examine the key for a moment. Seems like this inn was just another story Lena made up for her own convenience. “Don’t run away.”
“If that thing knows where I am, then I’m safest with you,” she says. “You’re stuck with me whether you like it or not.”
Trusting her to look out for her own self-interest, you head into the next room as you were told. The chest contains clothing, a healthy sum of coins, and a variety of personal effects you’ll find helpful. Figuring it’s less likely to draw attention, you slip into a new, very plain set of clothes before returning to find Lena ready with her own baggage.
“Let me guess,” you say, “you’re not from around here at all.”
“I was born in the capital,” she replies, “but I’ve always been moving around. Not so different from you, I guess.”
It’s pretty different from you, since you really only started moving around when you left your apprenticeship and signed aboard the Ru Talore. Even then it felt like your roots were on the ship, no matter where it made port. “I guess not,” you agree, seeing more benefit in going with her assumption.
She gives you a begrudging smile. “So where are we going?”
You’ve been thinking this over since you realised what you were up against. There’s absolutely no chance of you staying in Whitewall, but your newfound wealth has given you some options. You could head to Narrik, the capital, and talk to the local zealots. Spellborn don’t usually get along with those who trade favours for their power, but the zealots despise demons and could be powerful allies. Alternatively you could return to Halica and try to get the backing of whoever’s fallen into power. Competing nobles may hate each other, but they won’t remain idle when someone is killing and kidnapping their peers. Letting them know what they’re up against could even get you a reward. Finally you could head back to your home in Karth and talk to your master, though you’re not sure if you’re more afraid of her or the demon. Your master does have a lot of connections throughout the continent, even if you’ll need to convince her to use them, and getting there will take long enough that you may miss your chance to reclaim your ship and rescue any prisoners.
Do you:
  1. Head to the temples in Narrik. It’s Lena’s hometown, which may give you some advantage, and the clergy could even take the whole problem off your hands.
  2. Return to Halica and find support from the nobles in control of the area. You may even get a reward for your efforts.
  3. Take the long trip to Karth to seek help from your master, though you’re not sure you’re that desperate just yet.
Voting is closed.

2020.11.18 06:31 Dagenspear Changing Crisis On Infinite Earths, Part 3

This is Part 3! For parts 1 & 2, here: Part 1
Part 2
Here are the ideas God blessed me with:
Eobard explains to Barry that in previous timelines, it was a younger version of himself that experienced this in 2024. When the dagger was destroyed, his future death was prevented and he took advantage of it, saying that he couldn't resist making sure Barry failed this time, hitting him at his weakest in this timeline. Barry asks what he gets out of this. Eobard states that for his entire life he's lived in The Flash's world, taunted by Flash's existence, by what he'll never be, that once Barry's world is destroyed Eobard will be given a anti-matter earth of his own, and he will force Barry to live in Reverse Flash's world, with his failure of the loss of the entire multiverse and everyone he loves to keep him company.
Harbinger is immensely weakened from being used to kill the Monitor, barely any power left.
Iris comforts Barry in the midst of him feeling like Oliver's gone.
Lois hugs E-38's Superman, in relief that he's alive. He asks where Jon is, Lois telling him she put him down for a nap.
The earths are beginning to be destroyed at a more rapid rate.
Harry, Jesse, Jay and Wally are in this episode. Jesse and Harry were off E-2 when it was destroyed, dealing with something else and have been trying to figure out what was happening, when they couldn't get back to E-2, going to Jay when they realized it was destroyed due to anti-matter, explaining that it was near impossible to get here due to the damage of the anti-matter effecting the multi-verse, and only with the combined powers of Jay and Jesse and the breach device were they able to. Jesse having sought Wally first.
Shadow Creatures begin to come at STAR Labs, as Kara, Jjonn, the Supermen, Lex, Bruce, Ray, Mia and Sara try to prep a makeshift tower to protect E-1 from them, using Lex's device, with Harry's help, who tells them his intelligence has started to return. Kara telling them that Alex, Brainy and Lena are running the calculations to see if they can recreate the defense against the antimatter as well, using other means. Lex explaining that they can't. He tried. E-38 Superman telling him they'll get an opinion they can actually trust. Lex acts faux offended, telling him that if the multiverse goes, he does too, and he's not too keen on dying.
The shadow creatures don't attack STAR Labs though, but begin going after the civilians around the STAR Labs area. E-78 Superman, calling the shots, deduces it's a distraction and he, Sara, Mia and Jjonn go to defend the civilians, leaving Kara and E-38 Superman there to defend STAR Labs.
Jay and Jesse are dispatched to help civilians as well, as Barry, Caitlin/Killer Frost, Cisco and Ralph seek Thawne, with Wally insisting he go with them. To help, Harbinger uses some of the cosmic energy she has left to de-energize the anti-meta cells in Cisco's bloodstream, allowing to use his powers in a minimal basis, telling him it could kill him if he exerts himself. Cisco vibes, but is unable to get a clear visual, like it's being blocked. Harbinger theorizes by antimatter.
In the Black Lightning episode the earth doesn't get destroyed. Black Lightning is still taken from there though.
Barry has Cisco track the negative speed force signature of Thawne, in correlation to the energy signature that the Anti-Monitor used to takeover Harbinger, her with them. This leads them to the doorway Eobard opened that let the Anti-Monitor out. Barry recognizes the letters on the door. It's similar to the speedforce language, and the language written in the book of destiny. Barry remembers the Monitor telling them about how "Nash" was able to open the door that no man should know how to open, that was encoded with the language of time. Cisco tries to vibe, but it begins to hurt him, so Barry stops him, telling him that he won't let this kill him, then telling Cisco to vibe him to help him remember the full translation of the language. Cisco does it, and it's just enough to get Barry to link up with the memories. Barry begins to remember being trapped in the speedforce and the letters he wrote down. In doing this, he's able to decode the language and reopen the door, that's actually a portal. Entering it.
The portal leads them to an energy chamber, with a machine in the middle, that's powered by a captured Earth-90 Flash! He's held in a force field of flash time running mode on some sort of treadmill, against his will. Barry enters flash time, and tries to talk with E-90 Barry, who tells him that the Monitor took and held him, but when he died, he was taken from his chamber and put into this machine by the Anti-Monitor. E-90 Barry tells Barry that he can't stop, as he's been trapped in an infinite timeloop of running. Barry examines the machine, discovering that it's converting the anti-matter energy that flows through the Anti-Monitor, from the antimatter universe into an energy pulse that's wiping the earths out. And E-90 Barry's powering it. Barry begins to think that maybe he can avoid the crisis altogether.
As this happens, Batwoman and E-1 Bruce Wayne, along with the others, defend civilians as they're being evacuated out of the area by Atom, E-78 Superman, the CCPD and the Flashes, as Martian Manhunter phasing through things to get people out from unreachable places. Bruce and Kate question if this all matters, if they can actually stop this. Kate coming to the conclusion that she didn't think they could before, but she understands now that hope isn't something that exists in the absence tribulation, but the opposite. Bruce stating it as well, that by giving up they dishonor what it means to do this. Kate states that she's glad Bruce's here with her, as, to her surprise, she's actually missed him.
Barry sees that the only way to get E-90 Barry out of the machine without the energy output of the machine killing E-90 Barry, off (what Cisco cuts in and calls) the cosmic treadmill and stop the pulse is by overloading it, and tries to generate enough lightning, but he's still weak from Bloodwork and using immense energy to punch the hole to grab Oliver in Part 1. Wally suggests he try. But Barry concludes that none of the speedsters could get to the limit it would require.
Harbinger says she knows who could and transports away, getting Jefferson Pierce, AKA Black Lighting, her using some of the last bit of power she's has left. He objects, enraged, at being taken from his earth, angrily asking if his daughters, his wife, will live, and when being told that she doesn't know, he furiously tells her to save them, and when she says she only had enough power to get him. Harbinger tells him that they need his ability to exhibit immense electrical energy, telling the others the Monitor examined him because he had this ability.
Barry pushes Jefferson to help, telling him, "The only way our daughters have a real chance at being safe is to do this". Jefferson questions him on that, "our daughters", but Barry shakes it off, correcting himself, "your daughters". Jefferson, after a moment of consideration, then agreeing.
And with that we have the same scene of Black Lightning doing his thing, giving it his all to overload it.
Barry makes the call on the teams actions as they do this:
In this Cisco is able to open a breach within the force field around the cosmic treadmill.
Caitlin Killer Frost's out and fires a freezing blast to slow down the cosmic treadmill.
With Wally putting Ralph into flashtime, this allows him to quickly reach into the breach and grab E-90 Barry, pulling him out.
The machine shuts down. Barry and the team celebrate and then get out of there. Not seeing the antimatter energy begin to build inside the core and glow.
We learn that there are 4 earths remaining: Jay Garrick's Earth, Black Lightning's Earth, Earth 1 and Earth 97. This, of course not including the remains of Supergirl's Earth on Earth 1.
Meanwhile a battle with some of the shadow creatures. Sara and Mia are pinned down by several, when suddenly a sonic blast blindsides them them back. E-2 Laurel Lance being the source, as she steps into their view, in Black Canary garb. Sara almost reacts with happiness, before catching herself, realizing that this isn't her Laurel. E-2 Laurel extends her hand to help Sara up, a similar confusion of emotions evident. Sara bypasses the hand to stand up on her own. Mia asks what she's doing here. She responds that she was on her way already, saying that the team thought it was best to stay behind and deal with their things there, and wait for Oliver. Sara explains that he's gone. E-2 Laurel questions that. Mia dismissing it, saying that they don't know what happened to him. Sara snaps back that he's gone.
Lex works on the machine, atop STAR Labs, connecting it to the power grid of the city, it shutting down the power within a 20 block radius.
E-78 Superman and Martian Manhunter fly back to E-38 Superman and Supergirl, and tell them that everyone who was around STAR Labs has been evacuated. E-78 Superman suggests Jjonn go see if the CCPD need help with the citywide evacuation, as his powers could be beneficial, and they'll stay here and guard STAR Labs. E-38 Superman and Kara agree with that. Jjonn does as well.
Barry goes to Iris and they embrace, her asking what's happening. Barry explains to her that they stopped the antimatter machine, which they both say means he won't vanish. Iris is overjoyed, but then asks why the red skies are remaining. Barry says that it must be something else. Barry's uncertain though. Iris suggests maybe the speedforce knows. Barry agrees. Iris is clearly torn. Barry asks if she's okay. Iris blows it off, saying that it's fine, it's nothing that can't wait, until after all this, now that they know he'll come back.
E-78 Superman uses a combination of his heat vision and cold breath to incapacitate a couple dozen shadow creatures coming for STAR Labs.
As Mia keeps an eye out, E-2 Laurel asks Sara why she snapped at her. Sara tells her that the last thing Mia needs is to have a delusion that Oliver's alive. E-2 Laurel questions trying to dismiss her hope in seeing her dad again, suggesting that THAT is the last thing she needs. Sara argues that with the losses she's suffered she's learned not to bury the situation. E-2 Laurel tells Sara that she's lost everyone from her earth, and that's shown her to not give up hope. Sara relents, saying she's sorry for that, she didn't know. Sara agrees that maybe she's right, then saying with a smirk that it sounds like something her Laurel would say. E-2 Laurel laughs that off.
In the waverider medbay, Barry watches E-90 Barry sleep, being helped by the waverider, with Cisco, Caitlin and Ralph there. He tells Cisco to give him a brief vibe boost and he'll do the rest, to put him into a hypnotic state to link up to the speedforce, then telling them to go help the others and he'll do this. This happens, Barry coming face to face DCEU Barry! Same scene, but after DCEU Barry fades away, Barry finds himself caught in a crackling lighting field.
He yells out for the speedforce to tell him him what's happening. The speedforce speaking in a distorted voice of his mom, telling him that the antimatter of crisis is damaging the dimension of the speedforce as well. Barry tells it that the antimatter has been stopped. The speedforce tells him that it can't be stopped and that the only way for Barry to stop is to sacrifice himself. Barry tries to argue otherwise. But the speedforce insists. Barry asks for it's help. It replying that they've been too damaged to help. Barry drops to his knees, in emotional exhaustion, saying that he's too weak to stop it. Until he feels a hand touch his face, him looking up to see his daughter, Nora West-Allen. She tells him that the multiverse needs him to do this. Barry questions how he can if he couldn't even save her, just like he couldn't save his mom and dad, concluding that everyone he loves will die and he'll be all that's left, then beginning to breakdown. Nora says that he still has a family, people who care about him, who can help, finally telling him to, "Run Barry, run" and he's suddenly snapped out of the speedforce, back in the waverider, still an emotional wreck.
Jefferson Pierce, Black Lightning, watching Barry, asks him if he's okay. Barry doesn't answer. Jefferson tells him that he heard him say the name Nora, as he was in that trance he was in, asking Barry if that was the name of his daughter. Barry, shocked that he knows, asks him how he does. Jefferson explains he can read the desperation and the pain on his face right now, along with his slip up earlier, concluding that she died. Barry tells him it was months ago. He says he's sorry. Barry tells him it was his fault, he pushed her away, he was too angry with her, to understand what she was feeling and that if he had maybe she wouldn't have disintegrated in his arms, finishing that maybe he deserves to die for that, to never see her again. Jefferson aggressively pushes back against that, telling him he can't imagine what he's feeling right now, and that he wouldn't know what to do with himself if he lost his girls, then snapping back that Barry still needs to step up. Barry says that he can't, he's too weak. But Jefferson's heard enough and slaps Barry, telling him that his family, everyone's family, is going to die, if this isn't stopped and they need all hands on deck for that, saying that somewhere in him, Barry knows that his powers are a gift from God, and that they're here for this purpose, that they're chosen for it. Barry has a moment, remembering Oliver's line from the Pilot, "I don't think that bolt of lightning struck you, Barry. I think it chose you." Barry tells Jefferson that a friend told him something like that once. Jefferson states that he wasn't lying. Barry, with resolve, agrees.
Atom assists Harry and Lex in working out some final touches on the machine, Atom telling them that they're going to need something more powerful to get this to reach the levels necessary. Harry and Lex begin arguing about something else that's missing, almost competing to reach the solution, then concluding that they need something that can project intense sonic frequencies across distances. Atom realizes what they could do and asks, "Can we use someONE?"
We show an establishing shot of Jesse and Jay speeding around the remainder of the city, looking for more civilians.
Barry superspeeds up to Wally (whose using his speed powers to bring people), Cisco (whose using his breach powers so Frost and Ralph can get people from other parts of the city and bring them there, in spite of it clearly hurting him, his nose bleeding) and the others, with the CCPD, at the edge of the city, ushering people out, Joe in attendance, making the calls on where to take them, as Jjonn phases through buildings with civilians and placing them with the others.
Barry tells them the negative speedforce tracker isn't working, suggesting it must be the antimatter getting stronger, stating that he needs to find Thawne. Cisco questions why he'd think it's the antimatter, as they stopped it. Barry tells them that they didn't and that it's somehow still going. Cisco insists that they get back to that machine and do something, figure out what's wrong. Barry states that they don't have time. Killer Frost turns back into Caitlin and she says that they can't let Barry die. Ralph states that Barry's their friend and The Flash has to live. Wally watches on contemplatively at this, then saying that the city needs the Flash.
Barry shuts them all down, stating definitively that no, they can't put the multiverse over his life, ordering them to stay on mission and then apologizes first for it, before asking Cisco to give a quick vibe to see anything that can lead him to Thawne.
Cisco conflict-ingly does it, seeing Thawne standing, but not seeing any defined shapes around him. Thawne then turns, looking right at Cisco, smiling, telling him hello again, and tell Barry he knows where he can find him, then stating that if Cisco joins him he'll have a place in his antimatter world. Cisco spits at him, then snapping out of the vibe, nose bleeding, and tells Barry that Thawne said he knows where he can find him. Barry realizes where he is.
Lex, Harry and Ray link up E-2 Laurel to the machine, Sara and Mia watching on. E-2 Laurel and Sara question how this works, Lex and Harry explaining in complicated science talk, and Ray simplifying it with essentially resetting the harmonic frequency of E-2 Laurel, so that her cry lines up with the pulse.
Mia asks if it'll hurt. Ray, Harry and Lex all exchange looks, Ray saying he thinks so, Harry being conflicted, as Lex tries to signal him to say nothing, but Harry ignores him and says it could kill her. Sara, worriedly, tells E-2 Laurel that she doesn't have to do this. E-2 Laurel, with conflict, states that yes, she does. Mia tells her that there are better ways to get revenge on the Anti-Monitor without getting herself killed. E-2 Laurel explains that that's not what this is about, saying that he destroyed her home, her family, and (looking at Sara) concludes that she won't let that happen again. Sara, eyes teary, says that she really is Laurel. E-2 Laurel, with a small smile, tells Sara that she tries.
Barry reaches his childhood house, de-hooding, and enters, finding Eobard, not wearing his hood as well, just lounging in the living room, where his mom and dad were killed. Eobard says that it's nice to see him, stating that there's honestly no one he'd rather celebrate this day with. Barry asks him how he's keeping the antimatter going. Eobard laughs at him, gleefully explaining that he's not doing anything. The antimatter isn't coming from a machine, but from the Anti-Monitor himself and his connection with the antimatter universe, the machine essentially only being a funnel for the energy to focus it on individual universes, from outside of time, concluding with, that by Barry stopping the machine he guaranteed it to overload with the antimatter energy, imploding and taking all the remaining universes out in one fell swoop, mocking Barry with the statement of it being all because the Flash didn't wanna die. Eobard then says that that's why he wanted to experience this here, as it's only fitting to celebrate the multiverse dying for the same reasons Barry's parents did, that his daughter did, because of Barry himself. Barry's eyes ignite in his rage with yellow lightning. Eobard only smiling in return, his eyes glow red, telling him to come on Flash.
Them both superspeeding their hoods on, Barry furiously attacks Eobard, them tearing apart the inside of the house, very similar to what happened when they fought around Nora Allen.
Eobard speeds out of the house, leading Barry on a chase into the city, outrunning him, picking up a broken piece of rebar and slashes away at an abandoned oil tanker truck as he speeds by, and when Barry gets there, he releases a lightning snap of his finger, it erupting the oil tanker in a blaze of fire, blowing Barry back into the wall of the building across the street. Eobard quickly zooms over, placing his foot on Barry's throat, choking him, as he tells Barry to give and let it happen. Barry states that he'll never give up, even if he succeeds he'll never give up trying to stop him. Eobard simply grins sinisterly, stating that he knows, and he'll always make sure he suffers for it.
Eobard, with readiness, states that it's time for everything to end, then superspeeding away, leaving Barry on the ground. Barry tries to get up, but is helped when E-90 Barry shows up and extends his hand. Barry asks him if he's feeling better, him replying with a thanks for saving him and that that waverider fixed him up real good.
Reverse Flash speeds in, standing before STAR Labs, welcoming everyone to the celebration of his perfect victory over the Flash.
Ray, with his comlink tells everyone that Reverse Flash is at STAR Labs.
Jesse and Jay try to superspeed there, before their powers start to fizzle out, and they drop in agonizing pain.
Black Lightning comes at the top of STAR Labs to helps power Lex and Harry's machine.
The Supermen and Supergirl confront Eobard. Naturally, the 2 Supermen try to talk him down, as Kara glares at Eobard. He blows them off, yelling, proudly, that he will gladly destroy every earth everywhere, if it meant the Flash suffered for it.
Lex watching the ensuing situation from atop STAR Labs simply says that he's never related to someone more.
The Supers step forward, stating that they will stop him, Kara's eyes beginning to glow with anger, as she tells him that he will pay for the death of the earths, her earth. Eobard mocks that. E-38 Superman tries to temper what he can see is Kara's rage beginning to boil over. But it's all for not when Eobard simply says that he'll make sure everyone they care about dies, and she blasts her heat vision at him. Eobard dodges it of course, but also opens a breach in his place that opens up in front of E-38 Superman, her heat vision going through that and blasting him back. Kara reacts quickly, in shock, regret, as she sees E-78 Superman rush to him and help him up , but then anger again, blasting Eobard with a continuous stream of heat vision, him outrunning it every step of the way, then igniting a lightning bolt and throwing it at Kara, it dropping her. Eobard cackles at their failed efforts, then saying that as fun as this is, he's got more important things to do, calling the entire army of shadow creatures to him, stating that he has a date with destiny, superspeeding away.
E-38 and E-78 help Kara up, E-78 telling them to go after Eobard, he'll take care of the shadow creatures. E-38 Superman asks him if he's sure. E-78 Superman affirms that he is. Kara redirects her emotions, to tell E-78 Superman to be careful, who shoots back with a glint in his eye and a smirk, that he always is. They take off, leaving him in front of the horde. He readies himself intensely.
E-38 Superman and Kara chase after Eobard. Eobard phases through a wall, forcing Kara to smash through it, but just misses him as he phases through the floor. She x-rays it, looking for him, not seeing him.
Meanwhile Barry, E-90 Barry and Wally speed up to Jay and Jesse. Wally quickly sees Jesse and Jay clearly in weakened and goes to check on Jesse. Barry and E-90 are beginning to show similar effects, E-90 Barry barely able to stand. E-90 Barry takes a moment to reflect on Jay looking like him and that he has the same name his brother had. Barry checks on Jay and asks them all if they're okay. They all agree that something's wrong. Wally asks what's happening to them. Barry realizes the speedforce is beginning to suffer from the crisis and tells them this and that the speedforce must be beginning to drain. Barry tries figuring out what to do. Wally asks why he's not feeling it as well. Barry snaps that he doesn't know, but then apologizes, saying he needs to talk to Iris.
Eobard grabs Kara from behind, phasing her into the floor, then getting out and laughing at her. E-38 Superman superspeeds up behind him, but Eobard reacts even faster, turning around and phasing his hand into his chest. Eobard simply says that Superman may be fast, but he's faster, before taking off. Kara breaks out of the ground and rushes to E-38 Superman, whose holding his chest in pain, spitting up blood. Kate lands next to Kara from her grappling hook and Bruce gets there on a motorcycle shortly after. Bruce quickly checks on Clark's wounds, telling him that it looks like he's beginning to heal already.
Barry gets to Iris, whose now with Joe at the edge of the city and tells them that they have to get out. Iris refuses and Joe says that it's not like they have anywhere else to be. Barry, with all his strength, brings him and Iris into flashtime, the agony of it tearing him apart. Barry tells her that his speed is beginning to wane and he saw himself in the crisis and he doesn't have enough power left to do that, he failed the multiverse, like he failed Nora and Iris, apologizing for letting his inability to let go of his anger against Eobard. Iris rejects that, telling Barry that she may have been angry with him at the time but she doesn't want him blaming himself for Nora, they're not perfect and they made mistakes, but Thawne was responsible and they can't let him destroy more families. Barry agrees, but he questions how when his energy is being drained and more. With that, Barry looks at his hands, the same ones that are bringing Iris into flashtime and realizes what he can do. He starts to leave, but Iris hold onto his hand, her eyes teary and uncertain, her other hand on her stomach. Barry realizes right away and says it, that she's pregnant. That's what she wanted to tell him before. Barry takes a moment to hold her. It's silent, mournful. Barry doesn't want to leave her anymore. But Iris tells him to go, that he has to, telling him to run. He tells her he loves her, as she does the same, and he runs, his hand slipping out of hers and taking off, leaving her there.
E-78 Superman is barely holding the creatures back. Atom comes in to help.
Barry, in agony, but pushing through it, speeds up to the other Flashes and tells them that they can save the multiverse, together. When they ask what that means, Barry says that if he can give others his speedforce and let them enter flashtime, they can give it to him and he may have enough power to do what needs to be done. Each one suggests they do this, but Barry tells them that they're either too weak already or inexperienced, it has to be him and they have to let it be him or risk everything they love. They all surround Barry in a circle, him in the middle and with every ounce of strength they have left, they release their energy into Barry, the lightning flowing into him...
Eobard superspeeds onto the STAR Labs rooftop, and up to E-2 Laurel, nearly struck by Sara with her staff and Mia with her arrow, who stand in defense of her. But he catches them quickly, telling Sara that she won't stop him this time, and knocks her back with a superspeed kick, simultaneously throwing the arrow back at Mia, it hitting her in the leg, crippling her, telling them it'll be his pleasure to make them watch.
The energy of the speedforce flows into Barry, crackling and with that Barry is at full strength again, the lightning flaring up in his eyes.
As Eobard is about to kill E-2 Laurel...
Barry, in complete superspeed mode, sweeps in and, with a lightning energized punch, blows Eobard off of the roof of STAR Labs.
Lex and Harry activate the machine, and with a sonic explosion practically emanating from E-2 Laurel's whole body, the pulse echoes throughout the streets. The pulse disconnects Eobard from his control of the shadow creatures.
Eobard is enraged at this, stating that it's impossible, he should be too weak.
Barry simply states that he's not alone and he's done letting Thawne make him think he is.
But then antimatter red lightning crackles in the sky, and Eobard begins to laugh, telling him that it doesn't matter anyway, he's still too late.
Out of a blood red warped breach the Anti-Monitor walks onto the STAR Labs roof. The antimatter explosion beginning to expand from that.
Kara lands on the roof opposite.
E-78 Superman flies at him head first, but is grabbed, his head caved in and thrown like a ragdoll.
Kara is horrified and goes for him, him simply blocking her attack.
Kate and Bruce are powerless from below.
Sara and Mia are powerless from the roof, as he walks up to E-2 Laurel and grabs her by the throat, lifting her up. Sara, in horror, begins to go for him. The Atom tries to blast him.
Barry, in flashtime, watches, knowing there's nothing he can do to physically stop him, but in that moment, he readies himself and punches a breach through the universe. He runs and runs, faster than he ever has, opening multiple breaches into each of the remaining earths, superspeeding through them all just as fast. Eobard superspeeds up to him, blows between him and Barry ensuing. Eobard is finally able to get a hold on him, telling him that he'll die from this. Barry, in resolve, phases out of Eobard's grip, him falling through Barry and is cast out, in a yell of rage, into the remaining energy of the speedforce. Barry maintains his course, superspeeding through every earth, circling it a million times over it, all the remaining earths beginning to vibrate at another frequency, the energy of it overtaking him, as he yells out in pain, the energy emanating from his body as he begins to be consumed by it and disintegrate. The only remnants, the flash ring and the burned, scorched flash suit symbol, which fall before Iris and Joe.
Suddenly all is still. All the destruction has stopped. The red sky of antimatter is erased.
Wally, somehow able to use his speed, rushes up to Iris and Joe. Iris in tears, inconsolable, breaks down, to her knees, Joe trying his best to hold her, but his heartbreak showing. Kara lands in front of them, her eyes full of mourning, realizing what's happened. Wally tries to comfort both, but is unsure how, then picking up the flash ring that remains. Kara carefully walks up to Joe and Iris and kneels down before Iris, picking up the flash symbol, telling Iris how sorry she is.
But suddenly the crisis isn't the only thing that's been stopped. Everything has, everything freezing.
And in a flash of light, Kate, Ray, Sara, Kara, Lex, Jjonn and Wally find themselves in the vanishing point. They all wonder what's happened and how they got here.
And are then told the answer, by Oliver, now the Spectre. He tells them that Barry burned himself alive to save the remaining universes from the Anti-Monitor, phasing them all out of the his reach, where time stands still, the vanishing point, but everyone else is unable to survive here and have been put in stasis in this outer dimension. They ask why they haven't. Oliver answers that that's on him and tells them that the only way the earths can be safe is if they destroy the Anti-Monitor for good.
TO BE CONTINUED...
END OF PART THREE.

2020.11.17 15:38 arrowverserpgs [F4AplayingF] Supergirl - Kara Danvers/Supergirl x Lena Luthor ☆ Supercorp

Hey you, I'm glad you clicked on this post 💫
I am looking for a longterm roleplay partner for a romance driven roleplay about the show Supergirl with the pairing Kara Danvers/Supergirl x Lena Luthor. I'm semi-literate, usually write about two or three short paragraph in first person , but I mirror my partners. I write on Discord, making a server for every roleplay.
I don't expect you to be available 24/7 for this roleplay, god knows we all have a life, but I would appreciate a few replies a day or to be informed by you if you can't do that much/that frequently or if you are unavailable for a few days. Communication is the most important thing in a roleplay for me. If we have a problem with the other one, we should be able to talk about it.
Now, to my ideas. They are just short ones that we can build a whole story around, so there will be more to them that I am writing here. Feel free to bring your own ideas or we can change my ideas a bit if you like that better :)
• an au where kara never dated mon el and instead her and lena fell in love at that
• high school au

2020.11.17 02:29 Spix-macawite Why season 2 is the best season and makes Ducktales a masterpiece.

Info- This does not mean to call out other shows similar to Ducktales 2017 like SU or She-ra because each show has its own reason to be a masterpiece. Instead of comparing to other masterpieces like Steven Universe, I'm going to compare with favorite episodes of Season 2 of Ducktales and why it makes Ducktales a masterpiece.
Before explaining my favorite episodes, I would love to talk about the animation. I really like the animation, it mixes art style from Mickey Mouse cartoons from the 2010s with the comic book art style. The animation is very impressive as well as how adorable are the duck characters. I wonder if they make fun of Breadwinners because if the triplets meet them, they'll call them frogs. After all, they look nothing like ducks compared to Ducktales ducks.
Depths of Cousin Fethry- Huey and Dewey visit their cousin that claims to be a scientist but actually a janitor. There was this subplot about naming sea creatures until a faint shrimp appears that turns out to be Fethry's pet. Why this my favorite because it very wholesome to see no matter how strange your cousin could be, you have to show appreciation. He's been underwater, mostly surrounded by his pet shrimps. The part of Huey calms the shrimp is very cute. There is no reason for Louie not be in this episode
Town where everyone is nice- This episode is a love letter to classic three Caballeros with Grafity Falls twist. The most interesting thing is that webby want to see local Brazilian culture like food and the festival. Donald being adorable while attempting to please Jose and Panchito by saying his rich. Dewey and Louie experiencing the tour by taking photos for the internet, sadly it was destroyed. There was Gravity Falls vibe to it like the village is actually an eldrich place manipulated by a plant that actually ate the original village. A very nice touch to the residence because is based on exotic birds like toucans, macaws, and even a glimpse of elusive quetzal which the last one needs more attention in other works. Like Gravity Falls it includes dark humor, Dewey was dropped as an egg that caused him to blink strangely. Donald realized that they are also nobodies like him, fits the theme of birds of a feather.
Whatever happened to Della Duck- This is a break-out episode the reveals the arc that going to happen in this season. It shows Della thriving on the moon while stranded, she had long journaling to fix the ship until it realized that it needs to be fueled by gold. It shows most of her character that matches the other Duck family, arguments (complaining about how licorice is the worst flavor and why using gold as fuel is a dumb idea). She gets attacked by an alien that looking for gold for her baby, she uses her maternal nature to calm the baby. The Moonlanders find that a miracle so they invite her to the city. The Moonlanders that insist on her are Lunaris (he's the worst) and Penumbra. The best part that it reveals that the city is literally made of gold. And I love how Della imagines how her ducklings might look like, she only saw them as eggs until later episodes.
Treasure of the Found Lamp- I like D'jinn's determination to get his family lamp on has a birthday. Even the part that task is created to distract him so the boys get the real lamp because it was sold by Louie.
Golden Spear- Is about Della duck is ready to head back to earth and how she's determined to promise the moonlanders to return for them. Penumbra is feeling suspicious about Della to point of getting rid of her. Lunaris keep his cool person up. After all, he is planning to invade the earth with the idea of Della because he thinks the earth is inferior. They set up the ship for her to leave so they could lie about moonlanders being inferior. Lunaris is an insane villain, to the point sabotaging the view of Della so he could have an army to invade earth. There was a side plot of trying to relax but the boys just ruin it, at least they made it up at the end by sending him on a cruise.
No one stops Della duck- the episode is very cute because Della finally gets to see the triplets- Lewie could have been Turbo. There were cute maternal hijinks in the episode that makes it wholesome. Della Duck proofs that he can be a great mother when a golden mech attacks everyone.
The Dangerous Chemistry of Gandra Dee- Webby and Huey are great wingmen to Fenton after thinking he is having a date with Dandra. In reality, Dandra is a spy of Beaks to get the code for Gizmoduck armor and the nanites. The nanites part is giving me Generator Rex vibes after Beaks is modified like an EVO.
Darkwing returns- There was a production Dark knight like Darkwing duck until Dewey wants the movie to be campy. Launchpad being a fangirl about the old Darkwing duck until he meets Drake who happens to be a superfan. Starling believes he's getting replaced so he has to sabotage the movie.....until things went wrong that everything got destroyed. Drake becomes the real Darkwing duck while Staring becomes complete insane (Negaduck). Launchpad and Dewey are very cute with their surroundings and interest.
Whatever happened to Donald Duck- the name really wonders what happened to Donald after being started and locked up. Penumbra frees Donald after realizing how insane Lunaris plans are because of a lack of military- until they found the secret war room. Webby and Dewey found out that Donald has an anger counselor because he's willing to protect his family at all costs.
A nightmare on Killmotor Hill- looks like a cute slumber part episode with the boys, Weggy, Violet, and Lena. Then they end up on dream island that after they fell asleep. Then we see the dreams- Dewey is the cool guy in school, Lewey is a cat in his dream, Huewey has a pair of long legs in his dream, Violet dream is mostly about reading. Then the most intense is in Lena's dreams. Lena's demon is she believes that she's still evil so she pushes herself to be good enough. Magica attempted to manipulate Lena to join her, thankfully her friends saved her from Magica. Turns out Magica uses a telepathic machine to mess up their dreams with her thoughts to get Lena. Since she has no magic, she is easily defeated by Lena.
Glomtales- Glomgold teams up with the Beagle Boys, Beaks, Don Karnage, and Magica as a family to go after the manor. Until Louie tells Glomgold to win a partnership, so Clomgold's collect their own money to Glomgold to win the bet- because one of them has tech another one is a pirate. The trap card of the bet is that "Glomgold" is a fake name, so everything ends up to Louie. The villains angrily flee until the finale.
The richest duck in the world- After the bet, Louie kept all everything, dubbing him "The Richest Duck in the World" But unleashed relentless Bombie that targets the one with most riches. Louie learns to be humble to defeat it by returning the company to him. Della tries to get a message to Penumbra to check if their cool with one another, she warns Della that Lunaris is coming.
Moonvasion- The stakes are high when the Lunarians invade the earth, Della and the kids escape elsewhere- even D'jinn is fighting against the Lunarians. Launchpad recruits DW- he is annoyed when someone called purple guy- FNAF reference?????? Darkwing, headless horse, Lena, violet, Gizomoduck, and others team up to attack the base. But failed, even Scorge and DW actually switch places-the harpies help. There one part the turned me off is that Lunaris plan is stupid, make the Earth rotate around the moon but no collecting resources or even domination. Then Della and the kids end up stranded on an island. Donald finally reunites (Mickey melon steals the moment until he was eaten later on ). Della began to lost it because he feels unconfinable being stranded like on the moon, there is a warming scene with Louie. Then they got resued by Fethry with his pet giant shrimp before returning to the mainland. Scorge is forced to ally with Glomgold to pull a scheme, it was successful until Lunaris finally lost his mind- now he wants to destroy the Eart with the Moon landers intact. The rocket that is used to move earth into orbit is destroyed by the shrimp. Della tries to stop Lunaris with help of the kids until Umbra helps them. Lunaris got what he deserves by judging his motives, becoming Earth's second moon- he's stranded on his ship.

That's a wrap of how season 2 makes Ducktales a masterpiece, like moments, comes together for something big- the invasion, Della, Donald's whereabouts, and character development on the boys. Lena even starts to be her own while Webby introduces her new friend. New characters show up in the end- moonlanders, Fethry, Della, Gandra, and even Duckwing. I wish there is almost time for Della to blend well in her new environment.
So what season make Ducktales a masterpiece and why by explaining the episodes.

2020.11.17 02:15 Rantarian Skyrunner: Entry 12

  1. This is a classic Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style of thing. I'll post an entry and give it a couple days before I figure out the highest number of choices. Individual entries can be located in their respective threads, but I'll also be linking the PDF containing every entry (and selected choice) to date. You can also choose to read the current entry in that PDF, and it's bookmarked so new readers will be able to catch up fairly easily.
  2. Vote for your preferred option by leaving a comment with at least the number. If this gets cumbersome I might switch to a survey link or something.
  3. Feel free to ask questions for more information and make comments.

2. Force her to tell you the location of the Ru Talore, and take her with you. She’s less likely to lie that way, and maybe she’ll even feel like she’s benefitting by having a Spellborn’s protection.
---
If there’s a perfect way to deal with this, you certainly can’t think of it. You don’t want to just kill Lena in cold blood, but leaving her behind is just going to invite misery. This is a town with an Academy, so its guards have the training needed to subdue that kind of menace, and you don’t have the resources to escape a really determined pursuit.
“Good news,” you say, wondering just how big a lie that is, “I’ve decided to let you live.”
She exhales, and seems to mumble a small prayer. “I can’t imagine you’re doing this out of the goodness of your heart. What’s the price of your generosity?”
You’re not sure whether you should be more offended by her assumption that you’re that ruthless, or by the fact she correctly realised there was going to be a cost. You’d intended to ease your way into the explanation, but it seems she just wants to hear it.
“I’ll be blunt,” you say, “I’m bringing you with me. I don’t want to kill you, but I can’t trust you enough to leave you behind. You and your powers are going to work for me until further notice.”
A range of emotions pass over Lena’s face, but she quickly returns to her former look of resignation. “I think that will probably get me killed. I’m not sure it’d be any different if you left me here, though.”
“You and your clairvoyance are going to help me find my lost ship,” you continue. “I have every reason to keep you alive while you remain helpful. Like you just said, I don’t even need to kill you myself if I decide you’re still a problem. Betray me again, though, and I will make sure that you die first.”
“I... see. You don’t need to worry about that, but what happens when we find this ship of yours?” she asks.
You shrug. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
It doesn’t seem as though Lena likes the arrangement, but her consent isn’t needed and you doubt you’d ever come up with something you both approved of. She does appear to realise that this is the best offer she’s going to get, so you don’t get any argument for the time being. “I assume you want me to find this ship? I have to warn you that it may not be as easy as you think.”
You frown. “Show me what you can do.”
“I... fine, would you say you’ve got a strong connection with that ship?” she asks. “This only works if I’ve got someone, or something, that connects with what I’m looking for.”
“It’s the only ship I’ve ever served on,” you tell her. “So, yeah, I have a connection. What do you need to do? Surely I don’t need to close my eyes?”
“You don’t. We need to be touching, but I’m the only one who’ll be seeing anything, so I’m also the one who needs to close their eyes,” Lena explains. “From there it’s just a matter of what I can see from anyone in the area. I can’t promise it’ll be of any help. Your ship is a Skyrunner, right? Seeing the surrounding sky isn’t going to be that helpful.”
“You could look over the side,” you suggest.
She shakes her head. “I see through the eyes of those nearby. I can’t see anything they’re not already looking at, and—more importantly—I can’t use my power for too long.”
Her powers are sounding less useful by the moment, but you’re not risking anything by having her try. You hold out the hand not carrying a weapon. “Do it, then.”
She seems nervous, but she doesn’t argue. You notice her presence in the Shroud intensify as she touches you, and her eyes close. Her brow furrows in concentration, or possibly confusion, and it’s several seconds before she starts describing what she sees. “Well... you’re at ground level at least.”
“A dock, then,” you assume. “Any idea which city?”
“No dock,” she replies, her frown deepening. “I think it’s in a forest.”
That doesn’t make any sense. The ship hadn’t been that badly damaged during the fight, and there are very few reasons a Skyrunner ship would ever land in a forested area. “Do you see anyone?”
“Just some of the crew,” she replies. “You put up with a lot of Skarth from the looks of things. Time’s almost up for now.”
You grip her more tightly. “There were no Skarth in my crew—almost all of them were Human! Keep looking until you find something I can use.”
“A little longer then,” she agrees, though you can sense her reluctance. “I... oh, that must be the Captain.”
She gives a brief description that can only refer to First Mate Lender, then rises up in alarm. Her eyes open, milky-white, into a look of pure terror. “He sees me!? I can’t...”
She grabs your arm frantically. “No! I can’t stop! I think he’s going to—”
Her words cut off as she begins to choke and spasm where she stands, wildly grasping at you for help. Instead of simply dropping to the floor it looks more like something has her in its grip, and that it is trying to crush her. Her head turns to face you, apparently against her will, and observes you with a sneer. “You!
The situation is certainly escalating quickly! Nothing is making any sense, but it’s clear that Lena will die if you don’t act fast.
Fortunately you already know enough to save her. Wrenching your hand away, you break contact and sever the connection with whatever was attacking her. She falls to the floor, clutching her throat as she sucks in deep breaths. She doesn’t move from there when her breath normalises, but curls up and holds herself while staring into space.
“What the fuck just happened?!” you ask as soon as you’re sure there’s nothing still here.
“Don’t know don’t know don’t know,” Lena repeats, her voice a ragged whisper. She’s practically catatonic, so you doubt you’re going to be getting anything much out of her now.
What you do know is that the Ru Talore has found a new crew. Lender—or someone who looks like him—is in charge, and was capable of realising he was being remotely observed. Not only that, but to strike back against the observer. Lender had more connections than talent, so you doubt this was his work, and he never had much time for non-humans. The fate of the rest of the crew—and the passengers—is a complete unknown, though you don’t have a good feeling about it. Lena may be able to tell you more about them—most likely by targeting Tau—when she recovers, even if part of you is afraid of finding out.
And then there was the way she looked at you. Neither expression nor words had really been her own, and you have the feeling that you were recognised.
There’s no way that’s a good thing.
Part of you wants to leave right away, but you need Lena for the time being and she doesn’t seem to be in any condition to travel. Alternatively you could spend the night here, but you don’t know what kind of risk you’ll be taking. You could also just cut your losses and leave her here while you put some distance between yourself and Whitewall.
Do you:
  1. Leave right away with Lena. You’ll need to figure out somewhere to go, and a way to move her without attracting attention.
  2. Get a night of sleep, and hope that Lena will have recovered enough by morning to make things easy. At least this gives you time to think about where to go next.
  3. Abandon Lena and flee Whitewall as quickly as possible.

2020.11.16 19:15 jed_boop The Black People Who Voted for Trump Know He’s Racist

Amid the prevailing sense of horror that so very many Americans pulled the lever for our incompetent-in-chief is a persistent strain of confusion that a not-insignificant number of Trump supporters were Latino or Black. Most ethnic minorities, unsurprisingly, did not vote for Trump—but then some people wonder why the number who did was anything more than, perhaps, enough to fill a bus.
However, I don’t find it baffling in the least that Black and Latino people might deem President Donald Trump worthy of their vote, despite the fact that I was most certainly not one of them. The non-white segment of Trump’s support demonstrates a gulf between how the “woke” left processes racism and how many people in the real world do. The former assumes that racism is a wedge issue, and the most cardinal of human sins; the latter are far less doctrinaire.
I, for example, am a great fan of old movies. I am quite aware that the world they were situated in was an implacably racist one. I may lust after Ginger Rogers and Jeanne Crain and Gene Tierney (as well as Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge!), and have a particular thing for the grand old comedian Marie Dressler. I am also quite aware that these white women would have seen me as less than human or, if nothing quite that stark, would have blanched at the thought of dating me and furthermore felt the same way about their children dating a Black person. Dressler spent some of her career happily singing “coon songs,” the nature of which the reader can likely imagine without illustration.

But I don’t need these performers, in a deep past I never experienced, to have—if they had met me (note how abstract this gets)—seen me as whole. What I value them for is the entertainment they provide me as a spectator. My self-image is unaffected by how they would have felt about me personally. It is driven instead by my real-life experiences, actions, and relationships. For me to turn my nose up at Top Hat or Dinner at Eight because the people in those confections wouldn’t have liked me much would constitute a gesture, and an odd one—me slapping back at people, or an era, that can never know I am doing it. I won’t choose this path if it means I don’t get to enjoy the abstract glory of the “Never Gonna Dance” number between Fred and Ginger in Swing Time. Ginger wouldn’t have swung with me—but I can pretend that I’m Fred for a few minutes and then engage in my real life where I can swing with living people, and that does me fine.
In the same way, Black people today may hear Trump claim, bizarrely, that he has done more for African Americans than any previous president, read about the segregationist practices of his and his father’s real-estate properties back in the day, and note that Trump is especially given to calling Black public figures “unintelligent”—and yet still decide that his agenda otherwise appeals enough that they will vote for him even if he wouldn’t quite respect them as individuals. A Latino person can know that Trump referred to immigrants from Mexico as “rapists” but still feel that Trump’s jobs record is more important than his racist sentiments. Unfond memories of life under leftist or socialist leaders such as Fidel Castro may, as it were, trump Trump’s racism in their eyes. After all, before the pandemic, the economy really was humming along in a way that materially affected American lives for the better.

2020.11.16 13:56 Dagenspear Crisis On Infinite Earths, Part 3 Fix

Link to the pretty PDF
Sorry for the delay on getting this one out. I've had a few crazy-busy weeks.
---
You selected:
3. Close the doors and stick around here. It wouldn’t be too hard to clean up the mess if you’re quick about it, plus you’d prefer to avoid letting Lena out of your sight and patrons might realise something is wrong if she doesn’t open the bar for the night.
---
You head to the doors while keeping an eye on Lena, close them up and drop the bar in place to lock them. You may not be an expert criminal, but you do know that running will be easier if you haven’t got an obvious crime scene to deal with—even if Lena doesn’t seem to agree.
“By the Rift, what are you doing?!” she demands as you turn back to her. “Have you got some kind of death-wish? I just told you we need to get out of here and you’re sealing us in?”
You shake your head. “We can work together to hide all this. I’m willing to bet these guys don’t have anybody waiting for them, and it’ll be easier to avoid a manhunt if nobody knows what happens here.”
As if trying to think of another argument, Lena spends several moments pondering your words in silence. Finally she scowls and comes to accept things as they are. “Fine, I’ll get the water and a mop. You can move the two of them somewhere less conspicuous.”
“Kitchen?” you suggest as you grab the dead man by the arm.
“No!” she says quickly. “We’ll be cooked if someone goes in there. There’s a hatch behind the bar that leads down to the cellar. You just have to drop them down there.”
You frown, sensing some duplicity, but you can’t find any fault with her reasoning. Nor can you take issue with how quick she is to lend you a hand, and there’s certainly no problem with how hard she works to help you clean up the mess. Yet your gut is telling you she can’t be trusted—maybe it was just her willingness to throw you to the wolves when you were just an innocent bystander, and maybe she wouldn’t try that again, but you’d rather err on the side of caution. You only relax when the bar is once again as clean as it originally was.
“Can we leave now?” Lena asks, seeing that everything is done.
“Yeah,” you agree, “but first tell me where you’re taking me.”
Lena sighs irritably. “I have a good friend who runs an inn. She’ll let us stay there while we plan our next move. You seem to be pretty clever, so I doubt we’ll be there very long.”
“Good,” you say, though you’re already planning your next move. It seems Lena thinks a few compliments will throw you off your game, and you’re inclined to let her keep thinking that until you can turn things in your favour. She probably plans to pin everything on you, so you need to keep that from happening. “Lead the way.”
You’re a little surprised when she heads for the front door. “Isn’t there a back door? It’d be best if people didn’t see us leaving.”
She hesitates before answering. You get the feeling you’ve missed something important, but you’ve got no idea what it could be, and there’s no time to figure it out.
“It’s a fine suggestion,” she finally says, “but that area can be surprisingly busy and I think people would find our departure even more notable. If we go out the front it means we stay unremarkable.”
You don’t have any way of arguing the point, so you let her take the lead once more, and are pleased to see that nobody gives you a second glance. She leads you halfway across town to a visibly poorer area and an inn that’s too cheap even by your standards.
“Just what kind of inn does your friend run?” you ask, suspecting that rooms in this place are rented by the hour. Lena’s laugh does nothing to improve the situation.
“It’s exactly what you’re thinking,” she admits, “but not every room is used for that. At least, that’s what I’m told. Besides, nobody’s going to pay attention to a... colourfully dressed man like yourself escorting a woman into such a place.”
You don’t like what she’s insinuating, but you’re still in no position to argue. The best you can do is remember everything you see, and try and overhear anything she says to others. At least it doesn’t seem like she’s lying about knowing the owner of the establishment—she nods to the woman as she leads you up the stairs—and the room she lets you into is barely suitable for its true purpose. Dried herbs are hung in key parts of the room, with the intention of concealing any undesirable odours, the bedframe looks more fatigued than anyone who’s ever rented the room, and there are none of the conveniences you’d expect from a room you’d normally spend a night in.
“Are you sure she was your friend?” you sardonically ask.
“I said it was safe, not nice,” Lena reminds you. “And before you start getting any ideas, I don’t intend to use the bed.”
She says it as though she’s playing coy, slightly hinting that she could be persuaded, but you not even remotely considering it. She’s attractive, but you can always pay for that sort of thing. The only thing you want from Lena is a way out of town without the guards chasing you.
You let her bolt the door, and quickly scan the room while her back is turned. It contains a bed, herbs, chest, a bucket, and a second-floor bay window with tattered curtains and stained glass. The window itself doesn’t look like it opens, but it comes with a hole for emptying the bucket.
“So what’s next?” you ask, looking at her as though you haven’t the first clue about it.
“I was hoping the man of action might have some ideas,” she returns with a frown. “I’m really just a barmaid after all.”
And that’s all it takes for things to click. You’d simply assumed it until she claimed it out loud, but now you realise that too many things don’t add up. She doesn’t speak like a serving girl, and her clothes aren’t quite what you’d expect either. She’d also taken longer in finding things at the tavern than she should have if she were actually familiar with the place.
You act before she can realise what’s happening, sliding out the enchanted dagger and trapping her between it and the barred door. Her eyes focus on it as her composure breaks, revealing the first genuine reaction you recall seeing from her.
“Please don’t,” she whispers. To her credit she hasn’t tried to run, but she may simply be too terrified to move. “I’ll scream!”
You raise a sceptical eyebrow. You’re not a murderer, but even you know that was a profoundly stupid statement. “Do you think screaming would help you? Do you think there’s anyone in this place who’d rush in? Anyone who could beat a Spellborn?”
She hesitates, turning your words over in her mind, then shakes her head. “What... what do you want me to do?”
“You can start with telling me what the fuck is going on,” you reply, “and I wouldn’t bother risking a lie.”
Lena closes her eyes and exhales as she tries to regain her composure. Finally she nods, and—with a look of complete resignation—begins her story.
“You already know I’m not like other girls,” she says. “My mother could see the future, in a way, and so can I. She called it a gift, but for me it’s been anything but. I’ve known the face of my killer since I was a little girl.”
She looks you directly in the eyes—she means it’s you.
“Then what you said to those people...” you reply. “You were trying to get them to kill me.”
“I knew you would be coming soon,” she explains. “I needed help, but I couldn’t pay for it. I talked them into helping me find an ancient vault, just so that I’d have allies when the time came for it.”
“They were threatening you at the tavern,” you say. “Was that an act?”
“No, they were getting impatient,” she says. “They killed the real owner, and I’m pretty sure they intended to kill me.”
You nod. “You were hoping we’d all kill each other in the fight.”
“I didn’t expect it to be that one sided,” she replies. “What kind of psychopath taught you how to fight?”
“‘Psychopath’ about sums it up,” you say. Your master was not a popular woman, and her methods were often needlessly harsh and ultimately drove you to leaving your homeland altogether. You can’t say she didn’t teach you how to be a complete bastard—especially in battle—but you’re not inclined to praise her for it. “I don’t know much about this future-sight, but that psychopath never put much stock in prophecies. What’s supposed to happen now?”
“I don’t know,” she admits. “It’s dangerous to push for too much knowledge. The more you know, the harder it is to avert. The crazy thing is that, even if you don’t kill me yourself, my efforts have created enough enemies to do the job for you.”
That seems to be the full extent of her explanation, but now you find yourself faced with a difficult decision. Lena is in no position to argue with whatever you decide, though it’s unlikely she’s suddenly trustworthy because you forced a confession. It may be possible to use her powers to find the Ru Talore, but would she give you a real answer? And do you take her with you or abandon her here? You certainly don’t owe her anything, even if she only did all this because she thought you intended to kill her.
Do you:
  1. Force her to tell you the location of the Ru Talore, then abandon her here? She may not be reliable, but that’s even more reason to part ways. There is the possibility that her stories will send the guards after you.
  2. Force her to tell you the location of the Ru Talore, and take her with you. She’s less likely to lie that way, and maybe she’ll even feel like she’s benefitting by having a Spellborn’s protection.
  3. You don’t need this drama. You’ll find the Ru Talore without her help, and she can stay here and deal with whatever issues she’s created. There is the possibility that her stories will send the guards after you.
  4. Your master would just kill this woman, and it’s not like you don’t have a destiny to fulfil. Taking her with you would be madness, and leaving her here only invites her to send the guards after you—best to end this neatly.

2020.11.08 15:02 jen5225 "Your ruse with Reddington didn’t work. All it managed to do was anger the people who want her dead" The truth, the colossal mess and the ruse

Spoilers through season 7
This was inspired by a post from u/TheDonald1 who brought up the idea that the ruse Dom talks about in Orion may well be the colossal mess he blames Red for that destroyed his whole family.
A comment from u/TessaBissolli on that post inspired me to take a closer look at the ruse and what it could have been. Can we link the ruse to the colossal mess to the truth Red is desperately hiding from Liz? Is this all one big secret or a couple of different ones?
From the very beginning of the series, we've heard that Red is hiding some big secret, some major truth from Liz.
There are many characters who know the truth of Red's identity and his connection to Liz. They all believe he should tell her something, which he has refused to do. So what exactly is it they all think Liz deserves to know?
The most obvious answer, and what the narrative has pointed towards, is that Red is an imposter who's stolen the identity of Liz's father. If that's true, then the people closest to Red would want him to tell her what his real identity is and why he's entered her life.
All of us here, regardless of theory, have probably believed at some point that this major truth is about his real identity. But is that really the big secret Red is hiding, or the only secret? What is he so desperate to keep from Liz and why is he so afraid to tell her, so ashamed of this truth?
Dembe: "You haven't asked my opinion."
Red: "‭No, I haven't."
Dembe: "Why can't you be honest with her?"
Red: "I don't know. I don't know."
Dembe: "Even after everything that's happened? All that's been lost?"
Even after Liz tells Red she knows his real identity is Ilya, then after she knows he's not Ilya...after the secret of the bones has supposedly been revealed and she knows he's not Reddington, Red is still hiding this truth from her. Is this really about his identity or is it something else?
Is there any way of looking back at what is said about this truth to figure it out? Is what we hear about the secret that Red is keeping from Liz the same as the truth they all want him to tell her? Let's take a look at what's been said so far and see if we can tie it all together.
TRUTH AND SECRETS
What's important to note, is that the subject of secrets and truths center mostly right before, during and after the bones arc. While there is discussion about Red needing to tell Liz the truth before that, most of the references in the dialogue of those two words come in seasons five and six.
Tom seemed to be looking for this truth in his search for the bones' identity:
Tom: "He will find a way to make sure she never learns the truth."
"I want her to know the truth. That's why I need to ID these bones without anybody knowing."
"Because I know the truth. I know everything. And now Liz is gonna know, too."
Liz certainly believes the truth Red was hiding from her was about the bones, that her father is dead in a suitcase:
Liz: "The truth? The last time I spoke to Tom, he told me, "I figured it out Why Nik died, everything." That's why I went home, to find the truth."
"I got to the truth that you and so many people have died trying to expose."
Even Red and Dembe both speak as if the truth is about the bones:
Dembe: "The truth always comes out."
Red: "It better, or we're not gonna find Sutton Ross."
Dembe: "I'm talking about your truth. It was bound to surface. Ross wants blood. He thinks you ruined his life."
Red: "I didn't give Sutton Ross bogus plans for the Grayscape Seventeen."
Dembe: "But he thinks you did, and because of that, he wants the world to know what's inside the duffel."
Red tells Liz the truth has to do with him:
Red: "I do know, by the way. What Tom figured out. The truth he uncovered has to do with me. I told Tom not to pursue it...An item Mr. Kaplan unearthed that I wish to keep hidden."
Even Kate believed that the truth she needed to give Liz was the secret hidden in the suitcase:
"Masha, I can show you the truth. If you want to know why he came into your life...I can take you. We can go together. But it has to be your choice."
"Elizabeth, if you get out of the car, you choose Raymond. If you stay, you choose the truth."
"I was so focused on you, I didn't see that getting you away from her is unnecessary. All I have to do is give her the truth."
"I don't know what that means."
"Our secret. At Tansi Farms."
"What have you done?"
"I have it, Raymond. I went there and I dug it up, and I'm gonna give it to her."
So far, all of these references to the truth seem to suggest that this is all about the secret hidden in the suitcase. What about the references to the secret Red is hiding? Is it the same as the truth?
Red: "Mr. Kaplan gave you a suitcase. In it was a skeleton she never should have unearthed and whose identity must remain secret."
Tom: "Whatever secret you're hiding from Liz, it'll come out. Family secrets always do."
Red: "This is a secret, not a lie."
Tom: "A secret you've been keeping from Liz, like you always do. Like you have from the very beginning."
Red: "But I am being honest. I do know, but I can't say. I'm not trying to be clever. It's not an ambiguity. It's the truth. I have a secret, and I need to keep it...even from you."
Dom: "You should tell her. Enough secrets. She deserves to know the truth."
Liz: "Tom died so I could know the truth, the secret hidden inside that bag."
Dom: "She may not know your secret, but she knows you've got one. She's never gonna let it go."
Red: "I have secrets. Like the skeleton."
Looking at everything mentioned in the series about the truth Red is keeping from Liz, I feel fairly confident in saying that this truth is about the secret of the bones in the suitcase.
REASONABLE DOUBT
Most people will say that this should be proof that Red is an imposter and he is still even now hiding the truth of who he really is. Case closed on the secret of the bones like Ressler tells Liz:
Ressler: "So the bones in that duffel bag, the truth that Kaplan knew, the one that got Tom killed is that Reddington's an imposter?"
This is certainly what Liz believes after she saw a DNA report at the end of season five, and it's what many people believe as well. But what is notable, is that we have characters who cast doubt and some uncertainty on the idea.
Ressler's first instinct when Liz told him that Red's truth everyone died for was about his identity, was extreme doubt:
"Look, I get that, but is it the truth? I mean, does it make sense that this is the answer he'd kill to keep quiet? That so many people have died trying to find out?"
Ressler also pointed out to Liz that parts of this story she believes isn't adding up:
"But why? I mean, before today, everyone thought Reddington was a traitor. The government, the press, and, still, the imposter chose to take his identity. I mean, he went to a surgeon who could have given him the identity of anyone in the world. He could have been anyone. And yet he chose to be a pariah. He chose the life of a wanted fugitive. Why? Why would anyone do that?"
I've gone into great detail before in previous posts that Kate seemed to believe Red was Reddington. We know that's who Kate believed Red was in 1997. What she says to Red about Naomi being his wife when they were alone suggests she never knew that wasn't true.
Telling Liz to walk away from Raymond like her mother never did in time, indicates Kate still thought Red was the same Raymond that Katarina had an affair with. Other dialogue only adds to that fact. There's really nothing else pointing to Kate believing Red was an imposter, so what truth did she believe she was giving Liz that had to do with those bones?
What Dembe says to Red about Sutton Ross also casts doubt on the bones being RR's. Dembe knows the truth of who Red is and who the bones identified as. If Dembe knows Ross has a DNA report showing that Reddington is dead, he's not likely to tell Red that Ross still believes he's Reddington.
Dembe tells Red that to get his revenge, Ross is going to expose the truth and tell the world what's in the duffle bag, which we know is the bones. So this sounds like Ross' revenge on Reddington is to tell the world the secret Red is hiding, not that he isn't Reddington.
Garvey didn't seem to believe Red was an imposter. What he said to Liz before his death connected the living Reddington as her father, not a pile of bones.
"Reddington’s her father. Now I get it. Reddington and your husband – how they knew each other. Reddington didn’t know you through him. He knew him through you."
Garvey is saying that the Reddington who knew Tom Keen is the same Reddington who he is calling Liz's father. If Garvey believed the bones were Raymond Reddington, then he wouldn't be referring to the living Reddington who he believed was working with Tom as Liz's father.
Not only do some of the characters create doubt on the current narrative of the bones, but we also have some details that don't add up in the identification of those bones in CODIS. Liz tells the audience that she saw a report showing an ID of the skeleton as Raymond Reddington. While we know that up until season five when there was a match made in CODIS, there was no DNA for the man in the system when he disappeared in late 1990.
So then how would it have been possible for the bones to match as Raymond Reddington if his DNA was never collected to begin with? Reddington was an upstanding, respected Naval Officer, not a criminal whose DNA would have been collected. Not to mention, that CODIS didn't become a national database until 1994, well after the man's disappearance.
Red and Dembe believed the bones would be directly identified in CODIS, and that identity would be a secret that not only would be taken public, but would also be valuable as a confirmed death. Red knew that the DNA of RR wasn't in the system, so how did he think the bones would be ID?
With the entire imposter reveal based on a single DNA report that no one has seen, with the biggest secret of the show resting on that one thing, I believe there has to be more proof than that.
Is there anything else we can look at over the life of the series that points to what this truth could be other than Red stole the identity of Raymond Reddington?
Could there be another explanation for what Dembe says about Ross wanting "the world to know what's inside the duffel." that meets the criteria for this major secret Red is hiding from Liz and the world?
Let's look at what else we know.
WHAT RED DID TO KATARINA
Besides the front and center mystery of this big secret Red is hiding from Liz, what has also been strongly hinted at from season three forward, is that Red holds some blame in what happened to Katarina. Red has told Liz all kinds of things about her mother. From her being dead, or gone, or not knowing what happened to her, Red has been all over the place. We know he's hiding where she is, so are Dom and Ilya.
If we look at what we've learned from Dom, Red and Ilya, we may be able to put some of this together.
Until Liz fakes her death in season three, we really didn't know much about Katarina or the past. She wasn't even mentioned by name until late season two. Once Red goes to Cape May, and then to find refuge at Dom's house after Liz's faked death, that's when we start hearing more about her.
Cape May was the first time we saw Katarina, as Red also spoke to his hallucination of her. In his grief and despair over losing Liz, he talks to Katarina about a Hobson's choice:
"It was a Hobson's choice. There was a woman and her child. Both were doomed. Both would die. I could either save one or lose both. I chose the child. It was, it was the worst thing I've ever had to do in my life. Worst thing by far."
Katarina's final words to Red in his hallucination seemed to suggest that this choice he made resulted in her death. Or at least the death of the role of daughter, mother, and lover which separated all of them going forward.
"You had no choice. It was me or Masha."
"I'm sorry."
"Raymond, you did save me. Through her. It was the only way. You chose well."
After an apology to his hallucination of Katarina, he goes next to inform Katarina's father and Liz's grandfather about her death. That's when we learn that Dom seems to blame Red for what happened to Katarina as well.
Dom is full of anger for things he holds Red responsible for concerning Katarina and Masha and lashes out:
"She’s gone because of choices you made for both of them. First Katarina and then Masha. As far as I’m concerned, you killed my entire family!"
Dom allows Red to stay in his home and cooks for him, but it's clear that he has a lot of unresolved anger over what he considers Red's choices that cost him his daughter and granddaughter. Dom says that Red is the reason he couldn't see Masha ever again:
"There was nothing complicated about it. We had to back out of Masha’s life to keep her safe, after you made a colossal mess of everything."
Whatever this colossal mess is, it's clear that Dom holds Red responsible.
In the episodes leading to the bones being dug up, we got more of a glimpse into Kate's thoughts of the past. As I've said before, the way Kate acted reverently and lovingly toward the resting place of the skeleton, and the "K" cared into the tree, the signs were there that Kate believed the bones in the suitcase were Katarina's.
Many people had the idea at the time we saw the suitcase that this secret Red was hiding had to do with his role in the death of Liz's mother. What he was frantic to keep her from learning was what had happened to Katarina and his part in it.
One more big clue given to us after Kate dug up the suitcase was the reaction from Red and Dembe. After Red told Dembe that Liz confronted him with a DNA test, this is what is said:
"And she thinks that's Kate's secret?...So she doesn't know about the suitcase?"
"Not yet. It is gone."
"Raymond... I'm not sure Elizabeth will ever be ready to learn about what you did to Katarina."
After Cape May, the scenes between Red and Dom, and seeing Red's reaction to the suitcase being unearthed, there was a lot of evidence pointing towards this big truth being about what happened to Liz's mother, that the bones were hers.
Season five and the bones arc provided us with a match in CODIS, Tom's death at the hand of Garvey to get those bones back, and Liz's search for the truth. And seemed to shift the focus away from what really happened to Katarina.
Liz spent that time grieving the loss of her husband while trying to understand why he died. She also seemed to finally come to terms with being the daughter of the most wanted criminal and what that meant for who she was.
The reveal in 5.22 that the bones, the truth of who was dead in the suitcase being RR, appeared to give the audience an answer to this major secret that Red was hiding. Liz became consumed with finding out just who this man was who stole her father's identity and upended her life. All thoughts from previous seasons about what happened to Katarina, what Red did to Liz's mother, all got lost in Liz's quest to find the truth...until Liz found Dom and her search for her mother began anew.
When Liz finally found her grandfather in late season six, the story he gave her made Red look like a knight riding to her mother's rescue to save her and Masha. But behind that tale, what we saw in the conversations between Red and Dom was a completely different story.
In 6.18, we see that there's a lot of animosity between the men even though Red goes to Dom's for refuge:
Dom: "Have it your way. You always do. You'd take one whether I wanted you to or not...A beer, a life. You do what you want, no matter what I think."
Red hearing what Dom told Liz in Rassvet caused him to storm back to Dom's house in a fury.
"What were you thinking?"
"Don't start with me. You were the architect of this charade. Cost me my daughter and, up until now, my granddaughter and my great. granddaughter."
Lurking behind the bones reveal and who Red is to Liz, what's still evident is that what happened to Katarina is a secret that everyone is hiding from Liz. Whether you believe Dom's story is the truth, a series of lies or misdirections, what's clear is that he blames Red for the loss of his daughter and having to live the last 30 years being hidden from his granddaughter.
As the story shifted again back to Liz's mother with the entrance of blond Kat, we started to learn a little more about the events after the fire, Cape May, and the surgery. Ilya's memories of that time period filled in some of the blanks. What we found out, is that even in Ilya's memories, Dom blames Red for what happened and his plan in Belgrade was a result of what Red and Ilya did.
Young Dom: "Listen to me. Your ruse with Reddington didn’t work. All it managed to do was anger the people who want her dead.... Do you know they’ve assembled a directive? The Russian Vory, KGB, the Americans – her enemies – have pooled their resources and put a bounty on her head. They’re calling it the Townsend Directive."
As we can see, this ruse between Red and Ilya, whatever it was, stirred up Katarina's enemies. If they had once believed she might be dead, this ruse set off a chain reaction which led to the Townsend Directive being formed. Dom says this ruse is what caused a bounty to be placed on Katarina's head, and in turn fueled his decision to sacrifice blond Kat and set her up to die.
Is there any way to identify what this ruse could be? Can we look at the timeline of events after the fire to see when the ruse may have taken place?
A ROUGH TIMELINE
There is a severe lack of any set dates we have to go on after the fire. I will try the best I can to identify where the events fall into place, and where the ruse could fit in. Some of these events are based on what the characters say, and some are real life events that are important to the story. This is only meant to be a best guess. The fire especially is an unknown factor as we don't have a concrete date for it other than a graphic in a promo.
December 24th, 1990 (or before): The fire where Liz shot her father
December 27th, 1990: Reddington is reported missing
Spring of 1991: Katarina goes to Cape May to stage a suicide.
Spring of 1991: Two weeks after Cape May, Velov claims that Katarina was spotted at the Crosstown Ferry where her mother boarded the ferry under a new identity.
October 3rd, 1991: Koehler surgery that was arranged by Katarina
Sometime roughly around 1992: Red walks into the banks and takes the $40 million. (In Rassvet, Dom places this about a year after the surgery)
Sometime in 1994:
Fitch says in 2014 that it's been 20 years since he's seen Red.
The DNA Identification Act of 1994 (real life): (42 U.S.C. §14132) authorized the establishment of this National DNA Index. The DNA Act specifies the categories of data that may be maintained in NDIS (convicted offenders, arrestees, legal, detainees, forensic [casework], unidentified human remains, missing persons, and relatives of missing persons) as well as requirements for participating laboratories relating to quality assurance, privacy, and expungement.
Sometime before July, 1995:
The ruse created by Red and Ilya and the formation of the Townsend Directive.
The reemergence of the criminal Raymond Reddington into the public spotlight and into the FBI's radar. (The pilot says 4 years later, but Liz says in 6.01 that the FBI can trace this Reddington forward from 1995)
July 7th, 1995 (real life): The opening of Vukov Spomenik railway station, an underground rail station in Belgrade.
After July of 1995: Dom and Ilya plan to kill blond Kat in the presence of the KGB so that Katarina's enemies believe she is dead. The plan blows up when blond Kat survives and all of Katarina's enemies now know for certain she's alive.
1996/1997: Red hires Kate to work for him to protect Masha from her mother's enemies. (Kate says in 2017 that she's worked for Red for 20 years)
WHAT COULD THIS RUSE BE?
At this point, with the information we've been given, we can only make educated guesses to what the ruse could be. We certainly can look at the timeline and see where the ruse fits in.
Since the Orion episode, many people have assumed that the plan Ilya talks about to become Reddington and get the money from the banks has to be the ruse. That for some reason, when Red went into the banks to get the $40 million, Townsend figured out Katarina must be alive.
We need to remember that these banks were different than the Cypriot bank account they used to frame Reddington for the Gideon. That $6 million was wired out using fingerprints and a password. These other banks must have been set up by Reddington himself since they needed the man to appear in person to access the money. Otherwise, there's no reason to have anyone become Reddington. They could just wire the money out with prints and a password again. So Red walking into the banks should have had nothing to do with Katarina since they were known to be RR's accounts. There would have been nothing to anger Katarina's enemies back around 1992.
What's also important is that Belgrade wasn't right after Cape May and the Koehler surgery. Some time had passed as Ilya looked to be laying low, a little older with a different hairstyle. Blond Kat had remarried and gotten out of the game. When we add in the real life event of the opening of the Vukov train station in July of 1995, it makes Belgrade likely to have taken place in late 1995 at the earliest.
What we also know is that from the end of 1991 until the Townsend Directive was created sometime before Belgrade in 1995, we have no mention of Katarina's enemies hunting for her. Velov tracked her for the KGB for a time in 1991, and then nothing more is said about a prolonged hunt after he lost her trail in Prague. The CIA didn't seem to be making a big effort to find her with their obvious half-hearted effort to investigate the ferry passenger manifest. It all seemed quiet until Dom met Ilya in Belgrade to tell him that this ruse between him and Red angered Katarina's enemies to the point that they got together and created a directive with a bounty to hunt down and kill her.
If most of Katarina's enemies weren't actively looking for her anymore after her staged suicide in Cape May, after the trail went silent, what could have possibly caused them to renew their effort to find her? Wouldn't they have to be alerted to the fact that Katarina was still definitely alive to begin with? Something gave away the fact she wasn't dead. Did Red and Ilya try and fake Katarina's death again and it backfired? That seems the best possibility as she would have needed to somehow appear to be alive after 1991 for them to be hunting her again. Let's look at the events that took place leading up to Belgrade.
Things are relatively quiet after Red got the money from the banks around 1992. What we know is that Fitch met with Red sometime in 1994 and whatever they agreed upon kept a status quo between the men. One real life event that can't be ignored is the creation of the nationalized federal CODIS database in 1994. After these events, we have a ruse created by Red and Ilya that stirred up a hornet's nest of bad guys. Then Red is making a spectacle of himself by selling NOFORN documents and drawing the FBI'S attention in early 1995. All of this led to Dom's plan to make Townsend and the KGB believe Katarina was really dead.
The one very real possibility that u/TessaBissolli and I have speculated on is that the ruse between Red and Ilya involved the bones that we know ended up in the suitcase. After the meeting with Fitch and the creation of the CODIS database in 1994, what if Red's idea was to procure a body similar enough to Katarina and make it appear as if this woman who had been killed was Katarina Rostova? An agreement could have been reached that Fitch would help Red free Katarina from hiding and Red would remain silent about the Cabal and the fulcrum.
We know that Fitch was Katarina's boss in the Cabal and held some high level job in the US government. It would be easy for Fitch to enter the DNA of this dead woman as Katarina Rostova into the new federal database. Then all Red and Ilya would need to do is have the body show up, authorities called and have her identified in CODIS as Katarina Rostova. All of her enemies would know she was dead, and Katarina would be free to live her life with her family. She wouldn't need to live in hiding or on the run. Masha could be reunited with her mother.
But we know something went wrong and Townsend found out about the ruse before the plan could be implemented. Was he also high up in the US government? Did he find out what Reddington had done and realize that the only reason to try and fake Katarina's death was because she was still alive? Something angered Townsend enough to go to such great lengths to find and kill her. One staged suicide and another planned faked death with DNA in CODIS could have made Townsend feel like a fool and want blood.
We know that after Dom's plan to kill blond Kat backfired, he was worried about Townsend finding Masha. The one person who knew where Masha was? Kate. We can also see from the timeline that if Belgrade took place in late 1995 or 1996, that fits with Red going to hire Kate soon after. Keeping Kate close would also keep her quiet and keep Masha safe. Red allowing Kate to believe the dead body (now likely turned to bones by 1997) was Katarina would also give closure to what happened to Katarina and give Kate a renewed mission to help him keep Masha safe.
CAN WE CONNECT ALL THE PIECES?
The original post by u/TheDonald1 prompted me to look at the idea that it was the ruse we heard about in Ilya's memories that is the colossal mess Dom blames Red for:
"Listen to me. Your ruse with Reddington didn’t work. All it managed to do was anger the people who want her dead...."
Because of the ruse which blew up in their faces, that is what led to the Townsend Directive being formed, which led to Dom's attempt on blond Kat's life, which led to Katarina having to remain forever separated from her parents and daughter.
Did the bones in the suitcase begin as the ruse that Red had hoped to prove once and for all that Katarina Rostova was dead? Confirming her death would have kept not only her safe, but Dom, Lena, and Masha as well. Were Red and Ilya trying to help Katarina with a faked death that blew up in all their faces?
We know from all the references to the big truth Red is hiding from Liz that it's the secret in the suitcase. There seems to be no doubt about that. Red was desperate to keep Liz from getting the truth about the bones. The narrative of the show has led us to believe that this secret is about Red's identity, that the bones of Raymond Reddington would give Liz the truth about her father. But what if that's not the secret Red is keeping from Liz? If the bones were the ruse, then this has all been one big secret that he's hiding, which began as the choice he made that kept Katarina away from her daughter forever.
If the bones were the ruse, intended to be a faked death for Katarina...if this is the secret in the suitcase, then does that also line up with the bones being the colossal mess that Dom blames Red for? Dom clearly believes Red is responsible for the mess they are all in:
"She’s gone because of choices you made for both of them. First Katarina and then Masha. As far as I’m concerned, you killed my entire family!"
"There was nothing complicated about it. We had to back out of Masha’s life to keep her safe, after you made a colossal mess of everything."
"Don't start with me. You were the architect of this charade. Cost me my daughter... and, up until now, my granddaughter and my great granddaughter."
When you add what Dembe says to Red standing over the empty grave where the suitcase had been:
"Raymond... I'm not sure Elizabeth will ever be ready to learn about what you did to Katarina."
Then maybe Red's guilt and apology to Katarina in Cape May, Dom's anger, and Dembe's words, all point to one large truth that Red is hiding:
"But I am being honest. I do know, but I can't say. I'm not trying to be clever. It's not an ambiguity. It's the truth. I have a secret, and I need to keep it...even from you."
We also know what Liz finds unforgivable, keeping her from her mother:
"You said the name Masha Rostova had been lost to history until the manhunt. Now it's out there, and someone's looking for me. It's my mother. Who else would care? Who? You were right. Some things can't be forgiven."
Something Red is terrified that Liz will find out:
Red: "If anything happened to me, this was to go to Elizabeth. So she would know. Now I'm not sure I ever want her to know."
Dembe: "Perhaps, Raymond, in this case, what you want is irrelevant. If the universe wants her to know, she will find a way."
The bones could very well be the ruse, that turned into a colossal mess, the truth that Red desperately wants to keep secret from Liz. That what he did to Katarina will make it forever impossible for her to be a mother to her daughter.

2020.11.07 14:00 arrowverserpgs [F4A] Huge Fandom Roleplay Post :D

Hey you, I'm glad you clicked on this post :)
I am looking for a longterm roleplay partner for a romance driven fandom roleplay. I usually write about two or three short paragraph in first person , but I mirror my partners. I write on Discord, making a server for every roleplay.
For the OCxCanon roleplays, I will play the OCs (Original Characters) and for the CanonxCanon Roleplays, I'm open to play any of the two characters, as long as they are female. All the OCs will be female as well! And I won't make an exception for this, since I have no experience with playing as a guy and am not intrested in it.
I don't expect you to be available 24/7 for this roleplay, god knows we all have a life, but I would appreciate a few replies a day or to be informed by you if you can't do that much/that frequently or if you are unavailable for a few days. Communication is the most important thing in a roleplay for me. I don't mind NSFW content, but only if we both talked about it before. If we have a problem with the other one, we should be able to talk about it.
If you got an own idea for one of those pairings, feel free to tell me and maybe we can change up a few things :)
Now, here are the fandoms & pairings I'm looking for: Gotham:
Edward Nygma x Female OC 1: Nobody in the whole GCPD liked Edward Nygma. Everyone thought he was a weirdo and was annoyed by him. But that changed, when Valerie Bullock, Harvey Bullocks daughter, joins the GCPD. Although her father doesn't want her to talk to Nygma, they cross paths over and over again and very quickly, Val realizes that Edward isn't a bad guy, he just wants to make the others smile. She notices that Edward seems to have a crush on Kristen and decides to help him out. The two become friends, but quickly Ed realizes he may has focused on the wrong woman for too long. Val slowly notices she's falling for him too, but thinks he is still intrested in Kristen. And one day, Vals ex-boyfriend comes back to town, wanting to win her back and apologize for what has happened between them. But Nygma hears about it and pays him a visit, ultimately getting rid of him. He realzies, that it felt so right to kill him. He starts lying to Val, telling her he just talked with her ex and made him leave, while he keeps on getting rid of people in his life that only used to bring him down and that could hurt his relationship to Val. The two of them finally get together after a while, but Val is still unaware of what Edward is doing when the two of them aren't together. And one night, she finds a box of things in Edwards appartment where her ex-boyfriends phone is in...
Bruce Wayne x Female OC 1: Bruce Wayne and Diana Cain had been going to the same high school, but he never noticed her. That is until the day his parents got killed. Selina Kyle wasn't the only one in that alley, so was Diana who went out the same backdoor of the cinema that Bruce went through after a fight with her boyfriend, Jerome Valeska. Bruce tries to find out who killed his parents, but Selina didn't seem to have seen much. He tries to talk to Diana, wanting to know if she had seen something. But he notices how distant she is, then she notices the bruises on her arms and legs. He finds himself getting distracted from the murder of his parents, trying to find out what happened to her. Until one day when they talk at school, her boyfriend Jerome turns up and Bruce finally puts the pieces together, figuring out that there relationship isn't as happy as Diana pretends. Bruce wants to help her, slowly realizing she has become more than a friend to him. But Diana is scared, not wanting Bruce to get hurt because of her.
Victor Zsasz x Female OC 1: I, Valerie 'Val' Falcone, am the youngest daughter of Don Carmin Falcone, just 18 years old. I have lived with my mother for years but she recently passed away, so now I moved back to Gotham, to finish my school there and to live with my father. But on the first day in town I get robbed, so my father hires you, Victor Zsasz to look after me all the time. You're the best hitmen in the whole town and could kill anyone in just seconds. From now on, you are instructed to always be by my side and protect me. We start to flirt with each other, tease and mock the other one. We become some kind of friends, hanging around more than needed. You start to have a soft spot for me and really care about me and I start to let my guard down and talk about my past. And one day, we realize we have fallen in love with each other...
Jerome Valeska x Female OC Diana Gordon and Jerome Valeska have been childhood friends. Every year Diana visited the circus in which Jerome and his twin brother Jeremia performed. Until Dianas father, Jim Gordon, sent her away to a boarding school in England. Now, a few days before Diana turns 18, she comes back to Gotham for her birthday and suprissingly, her father allows her to stay for as long as she wants, now that she is basically an adult. Diana decided to go to the circus that she, Jermia and Jerome always hung out at, but when she meets Jerome, she realizes things have changed. Jerome had turned into a handsome young men and a charming one as well. But that's not the only thing; Jeremia has been gone for a few years now, left right after Diana did. And Jerome, he seems more serious and darker now. The lighthearted young boy she knew as a child was gone, but even though he's so different now, she can't keep her distance. Then her birthday comes up and Jerome decides to come visit her birthday party, but to his suprise, Diana is talking a lot to Bruce Wayne, that boy in her class. Jerome gets jealous and Diana plays it off, thinking it's not big of a deal that she is friends with another boy. Until she heares about a murder in the circus and that the number one suspect is her childhood best friend, Jerome...
Oswald Cobblepot x Female OC 1: Val Cain had lived in Gotham her whole life and knew how things went. There was only the high society of riches and criminals and then there was the rest, the lower class. And Val was part of the last one, never being able to really get out of that life style. That is until she meets Oswald Cobblepot in a coffee shop who offers her 100 dollars if she pretend to be his girlfriend while Ed Nygma gets his coffee. Val agrees and for a short moment they pretend to be a couple, just long enough so Ed notices. Then the two of them go their seperate ways. Until a few days later, Oswald stands in front of her door, offering her more money if she keeps on pretending. But the longer they pretend, the more real their feelings become and suddenly it's not just about making Ed Nygma jealous...
Jeremiah Valeska x Female OC 1: Valerie Cain, Jeremiah Valeska and Jerome Valeska had been going to the same high school for a few years. Both Jeremiah and Jerome had a crush on Valerie, but Jerome was eventually the one that made a move first and the two ended up dating.
